hi people,

The windows GWX icon suddenly disappaered from my taskbar when i open windows update it does say "Windows 10 upgrade reserved" that icon worked fine until now and it's annoying all i can find in regards to the issue cause is this error message in the windows logs

Error message: GWX Main: App failed to start hresult: The Data is Invalid.

my laptop is full up2date including the required updates for that icon to work (KB3035583 and KB2976978)

I know about the *.cmd scripts circulating on the internet but it does not help and if it does it takes way to long personally i'm thinking there is something wrong with parts of windows update because everytime i run that troubleshooter it finds and corrects problems not normal i would say ....

Have you "cleaned" your system tray maybe? Or you can check in Task Manager to see if it's still running. Also check the links in my signature if it's not running.

Hi Folks,

Problem solved the icon is back what i did was add a registry under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\GWX" valuename DisableGWX value 0 (icon enabled or 1 icon disabled) if you don't have a GWX key in there create it DisableGWX is a DWORD value.

As always be carefull while editing the registry also this batch file can fix problems with that icon i did not create that batch just found it while looking for a solution.

Maybe Kaspersky is blocking it?

Possible though GWX.exe is whitelisted think it is GWXConfigManager.exe that needs the network connection but kaspersky does not allow me to whitelist it i'll just disable it just to see if you are right.

Edit
I do not notice a difference with kaspersky disabled. The problem with that icon started when i had to refresh my windows installation because my laptop was stuck at the "one moment please" screen for over an hour.

Yesterday I noticed that the same thing happened to me. The icon is gone, but I had already done the reservation and received a confirmation email. The situation seems to me that everything is correct, and within the control panel shows the reserved update.
Even if the icon is gone, you can check and be sure on Registry how is the info detailed by Get Windows 10

I agree, really strange that in Task Manager the triggers are not present. In my case it's all correct. Why is it, that would be a change in the registry that you recently made that corrupted the telemetry made by GWX?

Yesterday when this evil behavior began, I'm not going to lie, I started searching if it was isolated to me. I noticed your posting here, I did exactly as you said, in an attempt to retrieve my icon again. I rebooted the system, and I have checked the event viewer. And to my dismay, I found that this change could have harmed me. I ended up deleting, I rebooted again and then I was monitoring event viewer actions until then, everything is standardized.
