Windows 8.1 wakes up only with keyboard, not mouse.

Before I reset the system it would wake up from either a key press or a mouse movement. It now wakes up only from the keyboard. The l.e.d. beneath the mouse is not lit until a key press is made.

How can I enable wake-up from either again?

What kind of mouse is it? Could it be you had the specific mouse driver installed before? One example may be Logitech.

If you reloaded Windows chances are it is running the generic MS mouse driver.

Edit: also check your power saver settings. It may have a setting "allow this device to wake" or "shut down this device to save power" etc.. for the mouse.

The rodent is a Microsoft one Miles.

A little earlier today the Action Center icon told me that there were a couple of problems. One of them was that a download hadn't been completed. It turns out that it was the Keyboard/Mouse software.
How or why that happened is anyone's guess.
I let the system finish the download and the problem is now solved.

I spoke too soon.

I had wrongly assumed that it was sleeping when I tried it again, but it was simply that the screen was shut down. So I am no further ahead :(.

Syncopator, probably very few people realize your Avatar is sending SOS in Morse code.

Yes, I'm sure. And I bet there's fewer who know that "SOS" is a myth. The distress signal is a single character ;)

I was an Aircraft Radio Operator in WW2 and the Korean War and actually used SOS twice--once in WW2 and once in Korea. And have been an Amateur Radio Operator for nearly 55 years with all my operating time being on CW (Morse Code).
