Windows Reset or just Install?

Hey Guys,

I am curious as to which is a better solution to Re-install windows 8.1.

1. Just Use the "reset windows 8.1" in recovery options

or

2. Use the Media Creation Tool and redownload windows 8.1 from MSDN..

I'm assuming re-downloading windows is the better option because I want the latest Version of Windows..

If I just use "reset windows" won't it be from when I last installed windows 1 year ago??

Yes, it will be from a year ago, but Windows Update will bring the OS back to date. If you install from a download, you will still likely need updates as well. Either way, you'll be reinstalling your apps and updated drivers, so, in theory, either option would bring you the same end result.

Ok so "re-downloading" the windows ISO will not help me have the latest windows version (8.1)??

If I use media create tool, it still is the old windows 8.1 that needs to be updated with a ton of updates is what you are saying...

Yes, that's a good summary. Either way, you'll likely be looking at a bunch of Windows Updates to install.

ok in that case, it's not the smartest way to go but I will have to resort to alternative options to get the latest msdn windows iso that has all the other updates from June 2015.. I know some friends who probably have the latest ISO..

i mean what else can i do.. i'm not going to reinstall windows and then have to wait 17 hours for downloading and installing updates because microsoft now comes out with updates every tuesday..

but thank you for the reply.

Sounds like you have a very slow internet connection. I've recently rebuilt two Windows 8.1 systems, and while I wasn't keeping track, I think I had the entire installs, updates, software and drivers included, finished in around 3 hours.

i download at 1.4 megbyte /sec

so it seems ok but just seems like a bit long for me when i can just install the latest windows iso from a friend

seems like the best option is fore me to just get the iso my friends have and install windows 8.1 iso (updated with updates till june)

I could be wrong, but that doesn't sound like a legit .iso file. In the time between your messages, you could have had the entire process completed, rather than waiting for this potentially shady .iso.

It really doesn't take that long, so I guess I'm not understanding the fear of doing so. It is certainly not like installing Windows 7 right now, and needing all of those updates.

I understand DeaconFrost, but I just want a latest windows.. I have my own windows serial key embedded in my Bios so I just need an up-to-date windows to install.. My friend has the updated june ISO of windows msdn.. so I see no problems...

I install that, then my code is recognized automatically because of my built in bios key.. and viola.. probably only need to download 1-8 updates..

i see no problem..

You didn't mention that it was from a legit source like MSDN. In that case, yes, it would work fine, but as I said before, you could have had the very same result on your own without waiting to get anything from him.

If it was me, I would have done the install on my own, and just updated through Windows Update. I'd still probably ask for the .iso, just to have for future use, but there's no real reason to hold off and wait. Whether you use his disc or create your own, the end result will be identical.
