File Explorer Keeps Refreshing and slows file transfers

Is there some way to tell W8.1 File Explorer to stop trying to refresh the folder information? I have a folder with hundreds of MP4 files stored on a WD MyBook 4TB. As I try to add more files to the MyBook it takes 4 times longer that is did at the start when there were only a few files in the folder. All I get is the green bar showing what the status of the refresh is and it never finishes while I'm adding more files to the folder. The file transfer rate went from 140 MB's to ~40 MB's. Am I missing something obvious again? Help appreciated.

Using "Details" for the folder view. Tried turning off "Display file icon on Thumbnails" but that had no effect.

How many files are in the folder? If you need to put thousands of media files in one folder you may be better off with a 3rd party File Manager that doesn't use Explorer to carry out the work.

You can likely find a comparison of both free and paid ones online.

Yes, there is 1000+ files in one folder. I guess another workaround would be to make some sub-folders and limit each one to a few hundred files. The problem was "livable" on the system with WD 2TB Black drives but became a real drag when I started to use the WD MyBook for Backing up.

Yeah, I used to use WD Black 1 TB Sata III in USB 3.0 docking stations. I see the price at the online discount stores is even lower than before the price spike. Of course with the bigger drives available they will unload the 1 TB ones.

The other thing to keep in mind is Explorer still has the old 260 character path limit. When you get down deep in nested folders once the string hits 261 Explorer spits out an error and does nothing. For really deep nested pyramids of folders you may be better off to use a manager that does it on its own.

Just to repeat, I'm using several WD Black 2TB SATA 3 drives to store the MP4 files on the Home Server. I'm using multiple 4TB WD MyBook devices to back up the MP4 files.

I never had an issue with MSFT's File Explorer until I got involved in this Plex Server streaming movie adventure. What non-MSFT file manager would you suggest?

I'm not saying it is related to your problem. But not everyone realizes the legacy code that is in Explorer. So if you were likely to generate long paths another File Manager would be a good idea. I don't have recommendations as I do most things with Explorer. I don't use software that generates lengthy filenames or store folders that high in the pile that it's a concern. I just mentioned it. But since you mention SMFT you were likely already aware of the limitation.
