Solved Exclamation point on lock screen.

I've got an exclamation point on the lock screen next to a symbol that looks like the laptop screen brightness icon. Everything seems to be working correctly, but I wonder if anyone has seen this before?

I haven't seen that specific icon yet.

Does it give you anymore information if you hover over, click, or right click on it?

Do you have any notifications in the taskbar notification area as well for this?

Hovering over it or right-clicking doesn't give any information and there is nothing in the taskbar notification area either. Nothing in the Action Center. I haven't reviewed the event logs yet, but I'll look there next. Google hasn't helped.

Are the laptop keyboard shortcuts for brightness installed and working?
(most laptops access this either through special keys, or by using the Fn key along with another key on the keyboard).

I haven't been able to get the Fn key software installed so maybe that is causing the issue, but there is a minor complication with that theory. I have two notebooks (Sony SR240 & SR290) with Win 8RP installed. They are "almost" identical, with the only difference that I am aware of being the SR240 uses an Intel graphics chip and the SR290 has an AMD graphics chip.

Same CPU's, same amount of memory, same chipsets. The SR290 doesn't have the exclamation point but the SR240 does.

Still, that doesn't mean the Fn driver software isn't the issue though. I'll play around with different compatibility modes and installation sequences and see if I can get the drivers installed.

Win8 is new - so I'm just guessing here.
It could be video drivers also - so get the latest Win8 one's from the video chipset manufacturer (ATI/nVidia/Intel)

Well, I've managed to get the Fn keys (or "effin" keys as I like to call them sometimes) working on one of the notebooks. Not the one showing the exclamation point unfortunately. I'll take a whack at that one tomorrow since it involves installing the various drivers in a specific sequence. Well, that and sacrificing small mammals under a blood red moon while muttering unspeakable...never mind, I've said too much already!

Well, the exclamation point is gone and the Fn keys work on both notebooks now. Don't know for sure what fixed it, but I'm not complaining!

Solved!

Finally figure out what that asterisk/exclamation point thing is. It's from the weather app. When there is an alert for floods/fires/wind, etc. it shows up on the lock screen like that.
