How can I get access to the data on my backup drive (secondary drive) since the primary drive is bad (can't start Windows)?

I thought "Windows-to-Go" https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831833.aspx would work and I would boot up on the Windows USB stick then access my backup drive, but the TechNet description says that when you connect a Windows-2-Go disk the on-line drives go off-line. I'm in the process of making one now but it doesn't sound like it will work for my purposes.

I am waiting for a new primary drive, then I will reinstall Windows, but until that arrives I would like to get to my backup disk so I can transfer my "Quicken" files to my laptop. Is there a way to access this disk? I don't have any encryption or secure boot on this system.

Thanks

So, long as your secondary drive is not a partition of your primary this should work and maybe even then. Use a live Linux disk e.g. pclinuxOS or kubuntu by booting from CD then you will be able to get at all the files on your secondary drive in the Linux file manager. You can then copy the files to memory sticks. It worked for me.

Thanks for the help. If the Win-2-Go doesn't work, I'll look into doing the Lunix method.
