What OS was originally installed? Is the hard drive MBR type of GPT?

Go back into Windows 8.1 Setup, and delete all the Disk Partitions. Select New, and Windows will automatically create the partitions for you.

With the way the DOS messages come up, it looks to me as its a Legacy BIOS, so during Windows Setup, your partitions should be as following

    Partition System Reserved System
    Partition 1 Primary

Highly doubt its UEFI, but if it is a UEFI BIOS, the partitions are as follows

    Recovery
    EFI system Partition System
    MSR Reserved Partition
    Primary Partition

If it's not booting from a newly installed system, the laptop's bios is not reading the Hard Disk as an active disk.

If you redo this, and it still doesn't work, then its possible the hard drive is failing.

Also, go into your BIOS, and make sure the hard drive is set to boot first, or, if you are booting from a DVD or USB drive, make sure the DVD drive or USB drive is first, and then the Hard Disk is second on the list.

My PC is a custom build with a 1TB HDD. Today, I removed a hard drive from my PC, containing Windows 7 which wasn't being used at all. The HDD in my PC currently has Windows 8 installed. It booted from Windows 8, so I'm guessing it was the primary boot device. I installed the hard drive into...
