How Do I Stop Unneeded Services from Running in Background

Ho do I permanently stop unnecessary services that run in the background? Every time I stop a service through task manager, it restarts after I boot up. Is there a program that can do this that stops these background services permanently even after rebooting?

use Services.msc and right click on a service, select properties, and choose.

I would be very careful with disabling system services. The problem is that you may end up disabling more than you bargained for. Many services do more than stated in the documentation. There is no complete documentation available anywhere.

The benefits of disabling services have been highly overrated while the risks are very real.

Windows 8 is a lot smarter in handling Services. It will not start Services unless it needs them. How much RAM do you have installed on your computer?

If the user finds the right compromise without breaking anything, he can benefit from it. Disabling services increases an overall system responsiveness and lets not forget about an increased security.

When checking, if the service is needed: Disable the service - Stop it - use the computer for a while.
When stopping the service, it will also stop the dependant services and notify you about them.
Those are the core services, that you should not disable, unless you know the consequences.

In addition to what TairikuOkami said above. Here is a link that you can take a look of what you need/don't need and decide for yourself. It differs for each user based on how they use their PC.

EDIT: Services from third party software usually set as "Automatic", you can safely set to "Manual" so they won't run at startup but will when needed.

Hi everyone. I made a mistake in creating my thread. What I meant was, how do I permanently disable unneeded background processes, not services. I actually meant background processes. Do let me know. Thanks.

Specifically what processes and why do you believe they are unneeded?
Without knowing this the question cannot be answered.

    Sysinternals Autoruns (currently 13.4)

It's portable, and has to be rt-click 'run as administrator'. That means it's powerful and should be used with caution.

^THIS. Be very careful what you disable. Usually, I add a Delayed Start to services I know aren't going to be used as soon as the system starts. That way, there is less impact as the system starts up.
