Windows 8 shut down while defragging and won't boot proper

I was in the middle of defragging Dell inspiron 15 laptop running windows 8.1 64-bit and I had to leave and I accidently closed the lid, which shuts down my laptop. Upon returning to my laptop, I realized my mistake when I tried booting the laptop up, it turns on, but all I see is a blank screen with the cursor and the occasional flicker of the wifi symbol you see in the lock screen. I have no idea what to do, does anyone have any ideas?

I have a recovery USB stick, as the laptop doesn't have a CD drive.

Boot the recovery flash drive, get to a Command Prompt and run chkdsk c: /r. Let it run to completion then try booting normally.

Note your OS drive may not be C:. Use the following to figure out which =drive letter it has been given.

    diskpart
list disk (you probably only have one and it will be disk 0)
    select disk 0
    list vol
    exit

list vol will show you the available volumes, pick the letter for your OS partition and use that in the chkdsk command instead of C: if it's not C:.

As for shutting down when the lid is closed. You need to make that change under the Power Options in the Control panel, to not allow it to go to sleep with the lid closed, same as shutting down when the lid is closed, if it is on AC power.

Just curious, were you using Windows own Defragment & Optimize Drives or a 3rd party defragmenter?

Then it's odd what happened to you happened, because of how windows defrag works. It makes a copy of what it's defragging first(VSS) then moves things around, also when interrupted it pauses. You might be able to repair the boot manager, using your recovery USB, in advanced startup using automatic repair. It can take a while so let it run through.

Download and create a bootable Windows 8.1 install flash drive following Option One here: Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 ISO - Download or Create

Boot it, click on Repair your computer at lower left on 2nd screen then run chkdsk as I described.
