Solved How to identify the Windows 8.1 edition?

I have this laptop, when I go to "System", under Windows Edition it just says "Windows 8.1". Is it Home? Pro? how can I find out? Or is this an OEM special version? (it's an HP laptop)

Most likely Core, OEM Core same thing if pro was activate it would say so. there is only core, Pro, single language MC and now Bing

What topgundcp said. About all you know for sure is its not Pro or Media Center, if it was it would say so. It's 8.1, 8.1 Single language, or 8.1 Single Language with Bing. Running winver might tell you more.

Running showkey displays:
Product Name: Windows 8.1
OEM Edition: Win 8.1 RTM Core OEM: DM

Running winver displays:
Microsoft Windows Version 6.3 (Build 9600)

So how does this "OEM" edition compare to Home or Pro featurewise? I'd guess it's closer to Home Edition.

OEM means Other Equipment Manufacturer which means it's intended for system builders like Dellm HP, etc. It has no relation to Core, Pro, Ultimate, etc.

I also means the OS is tied to the hardware it is installed on.

So if I do a fresh Win8.1 Pro install with the official drivers, will it run better or better off keeping the OEM version?

You have a core version, you cannot install the pro version unless you buy a new key.
You can download the core version from MS and install. It will be cleaner without all the bloatware embedded in the manufacturer OEM.

And how does the Core version compare to the Pro? Do you mind providing a download link to the Core version? I googled but no luck
