All of a sudden my computer will not restore from a restore point. I have used it in the past with no problem, but my latest attempt fails and gives the message:

"System Restore did not complete successfully, Your computer's files and settings were not changed.
Details;
System Restore could not access a file. This is probably because an anti-virus program is running on the computer . Temporally disable your antivirus program and retry System Restore.
An unspecified error occurred during System Restore, (0x80070005)

I have disabled Windows Defender real time protection, but System Restore will still not work.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks!

I had the same problem with SFC /Scannow and I ran the long "DISM" line in the 3rd entry of this thread - that fixed it. Took a while to run.

sfc /scannow not repairing corruptions

Regarding system restore not working: System restore points appear to be saved shadow copies. Twice I have had the shadow copy service stop working, and I found that "Repair Strategy 2" on the following page fixed the problem both times. Unfortunately, it also deletes all saved restore points so use this as a last resort. Note that this page is written for servers so some items may not apply.
