    Power Problems

I ordered a custom Windows 8 PC last year, and I have ran into various problems since then. Namely, the power. When I shut it down, the screen goes black, but the lights and the fans (and I assume the computer) don't turn off for at least five to ten minutes afterwards. This also seems to happen when I try to put the computer to sleep, which is particularly annoying. I often accidentally hit the power button on the front of my computer, which sends it to sleep (unfortunately this usually happens while gaming). I have to wait several minutes for the computer to turn off before I can turn it back on again. Any suggestions?

Change the power settings so the power button on the computer does a shutdown instead of a sleep. That will help a little.

After you've done what was just mentioned, you can also set up a Quick Shutdown shortcut on your desktop, or put it in your Task Bar.

Here is the syntax for that Quick Shutdown shortcut, for Windows 8.

    %windir%\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 0

Every space is important, so you might want to just copy the blue line and paste it into a desktop shortcut.

Historically, both Sleep and Hibernate have been troublesome since MS released them years ago.
You're better off to never use either one. A PC works best with just two conditions.....ON and OFF.

I have a set routine for setting up a new PC or a new install of an OS, and in that list is a script that disables "Hibernate".
Not only do I not trust it, but disabling it gets rid of that Humongous 'hiberfil.sys' file in the root directory.
If you do backups of your C: partition (I do, once a week) getting rid of big files like that one is very helpful.

    Good Luck!

PS: The only time you should EVER shut down your PC with the Power ON button is if it's locked up and no other method will work.

Thank you for all the help! I set up TechnoMage's shortcut, and it works great. I also configured the power button on my computer to do nothing.
