I would also like to delete metro in it's entirety or at least as much as possible.

Also, I have a dual monitor setup. On is my flatscreen tv, which is hooked up to the computer for home theater. I seem to have a duplicate task bar and icons on the tv, which I most certainly did not have on 7.

Thought..??

Thanks.

The taskbar on multiple monitors is a new feature of windows 8. you can turn the task bar off on multiple monitors. by right clicking on the taskbar selecting properties and unchecking show taskbar on all displays

disabling metro hasn't been possible since the developer preview. hopefully the option comes back for businesses or something

Hello Rickkins.

My proposal to use hibernation as a bypass
of the metro is not suitable for most users.

I suggest the desktop tile for Windows 8.

Today, as of this edit,
I have temporarily gone back to Vista Ultimate.

Disabling Metro is possible with the Developer's Preview. There has been a lot of hacks to do that. I still use Developer Preview now on my older machine and it has Metro disabled and it has the classic Start button orb and classic Start menu enabled. But disabling Metro was not possible with the Consumer's Preview.

I can't get it to boot direct to the desktop.

Always that damn start screen appears first.

If we can figure that out - it would make a lot of people happy.

Rickkins, could I ask, do you know what hibernation is?

Hibernation turns your computer off completely.
The OS takes a snapshot of your memory then turns the computer off.

It is not sleep mode.

Oops...I may have been mistaking the two. I'll give your suggestion a try then.

Thanks.

The one thing hibernation is not is "booting"; see thread title for relevance. Moreover, it's not a good idea to use hibernation often with SSD boot drives due to the massive amount of writing each hibernation incurs. If you're using hybrid sleep, you may want to stop, because it's a great way to add tens of GBs of writes each and every day. Now if you're concerned about a power outage occurring while in standard sleep in effect causing a disorderly shutdown, there may be hope if you're using a UPS. Before disabling hybrid sleep for good, I verified APC's BX1500G/Powerchute combination wakes my computer and hibernates it in that scenario.

This is all semantics now.
Turning a computer ON from OFF is what?
Not a boot?
I fully understand restoring from hibernation is different than a full startup.

Booting implies starting the OS from a clean slate. Hibernation is just sleep stored to disk. It takes a lot longer to resume from hibernation than sleep, and as long you account for the power outage possibility I discussed, sleep would be the thing to use. It's been rock solid on my Windows 7 computers. But it's still not "booting" per the thread title.

What is wrong with writing massively to an SSD?
Is it not electrically less stressful to the magnetic media than writing to a drive with moving parts?

SSD cells have a limited number of write cycles. For example, my Intel X-25M is rated for something like 15 TB of writes over its lifetime without overprovisioning, which if employed, decreases its capacity by whatever amount you're willing to sacrifice. A PC with say 8 GB of RAM hibernated a few times a day could easily write 20 GB to the SSD each day. That's 7 TB a year. So if I used hybrid sleep or manually hibernated this often, the hibernation process would exhaust my SSD's write cycles in just two years. It's not necessary on a laptop, nor on a PC with a decent UPS as I described; in these scenarios, normal sleep is to be greatly preferred to hybrid sleep or hibernation.

The poster asked for a way to get to the desktop directly.
This is one way.

It's still not booting.

Whether or not it is a good idea is a matter of opinion.

It's more than just opinion when using an SSD. It's more than just opinion when you compare the time to resume from hibernation to the time to resume from sleep, which is the same thing modulo the power outage concern, which like I said, doesn't really apply to laptops or desktop PCs using decent UPSes.

Sleep mode is another issue.

As I said previously,
It works for me!
Do what you want.
Thanks.

Hello.
I cannot support bypassing the metro if using 8.

The metro is the start screen shell menu User Interface.

I'm of the same mind.

I want to boot from off directly to the desktop.

I do not like using hibernation for just the reasons crawfish outlined.

So just how do you accomplish this seemingly ORDINARY task in Windows 8? Anyone?:sarc:

While it's somewhat cumbersome to set up, one method of forcing Windows 8 to boot directly to the desktop is presented here. This method was written for the Consumer Preview. I have not tested it with the Release Preview.
