I am still disappointed that there is still no Start Menu in the "Desktop App"
Anyone know if MS is going to put it in in final?

Hi Robin.
There are sticklers out there that insist Microsoft must provide the familiar start button and menu.
Microsoft has stated that the metro start page is the new start menu.
It can be annoying at times, however,

the familiar start button and menu for the desktop is available to install.
Users can do their own research online for something they might like to install or set up.
There are free programs and programs to buy that do the same thing as the familiar start menu.

Also try right clicking the bottom left of the desktop.

from what I was able to gather the 2 desktop versions windows 8 and windows 8 pro will be quite different, windows 8 is being marketed for the home user while windows 8 pro is being marketed for the buisness end and will be quite different in some ways, possibly having the familiar start menu instead of metro.

Of course it will stay on the forum, and so will this:

Use a search engine to find "Download free Vista Start Button." I did, and it works fine.

I tried the Vista Start Button but it crashes on mine.
I tried Classic Shell instead- looks a bit different but does the same thing Welcome to Classic Shell
and doesn't crash, but i would hope in the pro version they at least put back the start menu on the Desktop App. That would be the most logical place to put it- this way you have both worlds

Heh, funny thing is that I just moved back to Win8 from Win7 as my mobo's programs would not run on CP. Two months with Win7 and I never once used the start button. I had forgotten all about it!
I use True Launch Bar for running programs, Directory Opus 10 for browsing and search, and a folder of Win8 shortcuts for the most common tasks. I haven't needed the Start button in years.

I've got 'StartMenu 7' on my 32-bit CP, and it seems to work ok.

I liked Vi-Start, but with no right-click functionality in the trial version.....nah.

    Borderline pathetic.
It's great that there are alternatives or solutions from 3rd party's but lets be honest here, the majority of those that will be looking for the start menu button barely know how to use the internet never mind search and find a viable alternative.

maybe i don't give your average user enough credit but given some of the peeps i see daily i'm surpised they can find the power button never mind some of the changes coming their way with this os.

change is good, but to much change is not good, there is no reason they can't include the start menu in this os and then when they go to launch the next os remove it then, at least that way there is some cross over so those not so tech savvy as those that frequent these forums have familiar territory to start with.

considering there is only a small fraction of users the world over that even remotly utilise there computers and all the features effectively it just seems like a stupid mistake that will bite them in the ass.

Robin, you're not the only person whose computer wouldn't accept the Vista Start Button, but there are other free alternatives on the web.

If the final version of Windows 8 doesn't include a Start Button (and I predict that it will) it is no big deal.
