Computer ignores my display shut off and sleep settings

For some weeks now this computer shuts off the desktop display after a few minutes and shows the log-in screen which requires my p.i.n. This is displayed for a further minute or so before the screen goes black.

This behaviour doesn't change regardless of the settings in Power Options.

I can't remember if I downloaded anything which may have caused this. A possibly related change is that the desktop's icons' names are now presented in black - they were in white, are no longer underlined and they don't have shadows. I can't see any way to change this.

I have reset the system, twice, and run the system file checker too, both without effect.

After posting these symptoms on the Majorgeeks Software forum where it was suggested that I check the system for malware. I followed the required steps (I'm sure that anyone reading this is familiar with them) and presented the logs in their Malware Removal forum. No malware was found.

Since no useful information regarding the problems was forthcoming in their Software forum, and there have not been any replies for some time, I thought I would ask here.

    Can anyone suggest a solution?

always a good option is to reformat your PC, Make sure you back up everything you want to keep.

I've had the feeling that this would be the solution.

I know that many people are enamoured with Windows 8.1 and vociferously defend it, but I've found it a nightmare to navigate, to the point of being user-hostile (it's far too clever for its own good), and I have not experienced the speed/agility which has been mentioned - it seems no faster than XP.

If, as seems likely, I have to reinstall the damned thing again (I've done it twice already), then I shall probably install a virtual machine and use that for XP. I can then, hopefully, leave 8.1 well alone.

Thank you David, I use that already. What a vast improvement over the Fisher Price interface.

I'm having an interesting problem with Windows 8.1. The computer should be going to sleep on its own (it doesn't always) so I sometimes put it to sleep manually. 75% of the time it works fine, but other times the display will go black yet the computer remains on. If I try to "wake" the computer...

Leave on, Sleep or Shut Down. in Performance & Maintenance
Ok so it is an old question, but one I am quite keen to know the answer. A time ago PC users would argue is it better to leave the PC on, put it in sleep mode or shut it down completely. I am not that worried about power consumption I just want to know what stresses your CPU and other hardware...
