I changed the SVI owner and permission to get inside the folder and now I forget the default owner and permission so I changed the owner to TrustedInstaller for the SVI folder and everything inside it and now I will keep getting access denied message when create a restore point. Can someone please tell me the default owner and permission for files/folders inside SVI:

1)System Volume Information folder itself
2)SPP
3)SystemRestore
4)WindowsImageBackup
5)IndexerVolumeGuid
6)MountPointManagerRemoteDatabase
7)tracking.log

Thx.;)

It is not advisable to change ownership for the system folder. And since you've already done it, the easiest way to fix it is to download:
Slacko Puppy Linux release
Put it in a USB stick and boot up from there, Open the C: Drive and delete it (System Volume Information) then reboot. Windows will re-create this folder with appropriate ownership.

EDIT: All restore points will be deleted so after booting, create a new restore point.

Just set the ownership to "Administrators" and access permissions to SYSTEM and it should work.
If this does not work add "everyone" to the group and replace child permissions.

I can't enter this folder either because only SYSTEM is allowed.

Thank you, but you can actually enter the SVI folder.
Open elevated cmd then type following: cacls "C:\System Volume Information" /E /G username:F, so you will have full control to the folder, see the permissions for the files/folder I say above no need to enter the subfolder just view permissions.
After you can type this cacls "C:\System Volume Information" /E /R username to remove permissions for you.

Hello everyone or I just set owner and permissions all to only SYSTEM with full control?

Or can I delete SVI folder at boot and restart PC to make windows recreate? Or this will just cause my PC unbootable?

Thank. But it seem to have only SYSTEM have permission to the folder and all its subfolders, nevermind I will set it to have only SYSTEM and delete TrustedInstaller and try if I can create a restore point.

Ok thank you much. I think only SYSTEM have permissions because many webpages say and I need to take owner each time I get in it so now I know users have full control.

A screenshot anyways---

The full control implies full control of ALL subfolders contained in the folder.

That's weird,
I never changed any permissions for this folder and it looks like so: ( no problems of any kind )

It means security permissions inherited from parent folder(s).

@Addictive Gamer
You are absolutely correct. The owner of this folder should be: Administrators only and SYSTEM is the only user to have full access. That's why even Administrators group is the ownner but can't even access this folder.

@David,
No offend but What's you have shown there is incorrect and I know in the past you did Take over the ownership of this folder but this is wrong and open a big security hole that virus can sneak in there and infect it.

@OP
You don't need to take ownership in order to look into this folder. Just download a portable Treesize (No installation needed) and right click to run as Administrator then you can see what inside "System Volume Information", right click on any item under it->Properties then you can see it. And by the way, cacls is now deprecated in Windows 8, you should use Icacls instead.

This problem should have been fixed earlier if you took my suggestion. Since you started changing ownership/permission and now the Folder might be corrupted and not allowing you to create restore point. Simple way to get back this folder is to delete and let Windows re-create it with appropriate owners and permissions and believe me, I have deleted this folder many times and it would not cause the Windows to become unbootable.

Hope this helps. Cheers !!!
