Haven't had a windows box in a while. Just got a new HP with 8.1.
If I remember right I could put files anywhere in my user folder. Now, with 8.1, I cant unless it's a sub folder?
Can use Documents, Video etc...just not in the top folder. Is this a change?
Thanks.

I'm able to save files to my User Folder. Are you an admin on the box?

Yes I am. When I try to drop anything I get the "not gonna happen" circle/slash by the icon.
This is when dragging anything from a USB stick or even from Downloads. This computer was bought last Saturday so I haven't really had time to screw things up yet :)

I think I may have found the problem. Why do I have two user folders? Or is that something else?

It works on the second one.

That is odd. Are you sure that the first one is for the HomeGroup connection? What does it show when you open Explorer instead of using the Favorites on the Left Side, Open up at C:, then drill down until you get to Users. There should only be the Personal folder.

The other way is to open a Cmd window and go old school, by using the CD command for changing directories.

Only the second one is in Users.
So what exactly is the Home Group connection? Something to do with networking?

Yes. It shares the Libraries across the network to Windows 7, Windows 8 & Windows 10 machines.

If you use Explorer, starting at the C: drive and also make sure hidden/System directories are showing. Then go to Users, you can tell if there is just one User's directory. Paste the results. That is really all you can do to figure it out. If it shows that other User account, or whatever it is, just Right Click and then click on Properties.
