Mouse and screen trouble after upgrading to Win 8.1

I have recently refreshed my Windows 8.1. It first went back to the original Win 8 and then yesterday I upgraded it to Win 8.1. Today something strange started happening. Every ten minutes or so, my mouse stops working (clicks get no response) and then the screen dies for a second and comes back. Then the mouse is back to normal. This has never happened before, and I am wondering why it is happening and what I can do to stop it.

What do you mean about blank ? Black screen(no pic) or blank with solid color ? Original mouse or brand bought ? Could be due to Graphics drivers.

On desktop right click the Start Button select Event Viewer, open Customs tab select Administrator events and see if shows red error in list anything about maybe Explorer.exe crashing .

Different models under the Dell Inspiron 14z originally come with Windows 8 you said ? Just noticed it was a laptop with a touchpad using a separate mouse. does it happen without the mouse ?

Dear jds63. Thank you for your reply. The screen (I am using an external monitor) turns off and gets completely dark and then comes back. I checked the Event Viewer and see no error sign. I am using Dell Ins 14z with an external mouse.

Thanks for looking in Event Viewer i was not aware you were using a external monitor on this laptop. Have you used it this way before this issue ? You close the laptop when using this monitor and use a separate keyboard and mouse ? Recheck the cable connections from and to the monitor and the laptop make sure not broken or loose. Try a different cable. Try monitor elsewhere on different PC or laptop. YW

I use the keyboard of the laptop and a separate mouse. There is nothing wrong with the cables.

And you have used it this way before this issue happened with same monitor as now ? How are you sure cables are fine, do you have an extra one to try, swap out ? Any way try monitor elsewhere as we need to rule out some causes here, besides a external monitor setup issue. Mouse model and brand you are using ? Check for New drivers for Windows 8.1.

Check for Display adapter driver, believe yours might be Intel HD 3000, since few model numbers under Dell Inspiron14z, check Dell's Support site. Even if you try touching the monitor cable to the laptop, does it go off, by wiggling it ? Bad connector can do this too.

I know it's not a problem with external monitor or mouse because it happens even when I switch to the laptop monitor and use its mouse pad. The mouse gets disabled partially--I can highlight words in MS Word but can't format it because the right click does not respond, and also menus do not open up when I click on them.

My laptop mouse touchpad is not working.

Check this article, besides this issue with mouse or picture could be related to system itself not responding, then causing issues. In general is it been slowing down ? Some i have already mentioned, update drivers from Dell. See article saying it too, for mouse or touchpad issue. Also look for graphics adapter updates.

Still can be another issue that is causing this, not really the mouse or touchpad.
