    D Drive Access

Hw do I access the D Drive (Windows Re-install) in my packard Bell laptop?

Windows screwed up and I want to reinstall in, from scratch, off the D Drive. I got a meesage from a third party repair system that the D Drive was locked, and I couldn't access it.

I tried my win 8 Pro disk but it said it was installed in another pc, which it isnt, It WAS in my old pc but thats been recycled by now!

If your 8 Pro disk is Retail just do the activate by phone. When asked how many PC's this software is installed on say "one". You should then get a code to enter to activate it. Is the Packard Bell a factory OEM install? If it is and you can't get the factory recovery to work you could just do a clean install with this media, Create installation media for Windows 8.1 - Windows Help That install media will read and use Windows 8.0 and 8.1 keys, even OEM embedded keys.

Thanks alpha, I may have screwed it up so waiting on downloads to check laptop. I tried to run 8.1 it would not activate, as I said earlier, but then tried to revert back to Win 7 to build on it. So want to format c: now but it says I have to use an 'elevated mode' when I went into cmd.exe. At that point I tried linux boot disk to see if I could sneak around the back, nope. So turned it off. Will be trying the flash usb in a few mins when completed.

edit: Stick works perefectly but I am going to need Win 8 back in first and it wont accept my code, I am going to try and ring MS UK - thanks.

Currently reinstalling win 7 on a formatted disk and then will re install 8.0 upgrade. Once I can find the MS UK number I will call then and get it reactivated, then see about 8.1. *sigh* ........................

Yes, Windows won't activate online if it has previously been activated on another PC. The way around that is to do the phone activation as I mentioned. One caveat with the download I linked too, is that the version you install has to match the factory installed version for the OEM key to be accepted. For example, if the factory install was just 8.0 or 8.1 and you install 8.1 Pro the OEM key will be rejected. That download will let you install 8.1 with an 8.0 key though. No need to install 8.0 and have to online upgrade to 8.1. I've verified it myself on my laptop. It came with Windows 8.0 and I can just install 8.1 and not have to enter a key. Automatically activates online with no issues.

If you could burn a recovery stick from your recovery partition, that would probably be your best bet.

Yes, but accessing the recovery drive seems to be a none starter, no idea why? Aparently its 'locked'.

Type Recovery on the start page and see whether it gives you "Create a recovery drive".

thanks whs, currently trying something else. Spoke to microsoft UK this morning and they gave me a link to download a fresh version of Win 8 to install over the disk currently going in (which I know activation will not proceed) and then I can install the link direct from MS with a valid code in it (I presume). My memory problems make my explanations a bit weird sometimes but so far its going according to plan. I started off by putting win 7 back in (original software) but it does not recognise any of my broadband facilities (too modern maybe). So I am having to put win 8 none active version off disk back in, so that I can access net to download the link MS provided. I must say here the lad I spoke to was extremely helpful and meticulous in his checking before providing me with the link.

The rest of the day will be chilly with some cloud ...........................................................
