We may be able to choose which edition of Windows 8 to install, according to a new rumour. The Release Preview is expected to launch with 3 editions, that being the default (Core), Pro and Pro Media Center edition. Each edition includes additional features from one another, and will probably vary in price.

Microsoft may be planning to allow us to choose which edition of Windows 8 to install, according to a new rumour. The Release Preview is rumoured to come with three editions, a default (core), Pro and Pro Media Center edition. Obviously, the core edition of Windows 8 will be baseline, including no additional features.
The Pro edition of Windows 8 should include more features, and the Pro Media Center edition will include all that of the Pro edition, plus Media Center.
We're not too sure whether what you see above is real, for all we know, Microsoft could just launch the Release Preview with just one Release Preview. But that is unlikely, since this is the last version of previews before the official launch, so Microsoft need to get it's last bit of testing done.

Interesting...I'm glad that Microsoft actually now has legitimate differences between the OS versions. I thought it was silly to have Windows 7 Home, then Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate, and Enterprise when all the different iterations were literally the same except for Xp mode in Ultimate and Pro and I believe HomeGroup in Home Premium.

why peoples are using the word core ? For Microsoft, the word core is use for the Windows Servers without GUI.

Hi there
the only feature I'm currently interested in (and using a lot at the moment) is the Windows to Go feature -- apparently only slated for the Enterprise version which is probably likely to be the least used version of Windows 8.

I say this because I've seen a load of large organisations just beginning to switch over to W7 from XP so in no way are they wanting to go through the whole OS upgrade again.

Ms was urging these organisations to make the switch -- for good reasons too ==but they aren't going to persuade them to do another upgrade for quite some time.

As for media center --there's so many apps out there for that sort of stuff --does it really need to be a part of the OS --and in any case Windows never played "commercial" DVD's straight out of the box --you needed something like WinDVD or (FREE VLC player) for these.

The ability to mount 'isos' and use windows explorer on these greatly helps those without dvd players on their netbook / lap top.

Basically these two apps cut it for me --if it's not on the preview then I'm sticking with the CP edition I already have -- and will wait till I can get hold of W8 Enterprise (which will be as rare as Hen's teeth if it ever sees the light of day).

I also want the same range of Language Interface packs that W7 had too.

Otherwise -- W7 stays. I like W8 but without the apps I want there isn't IMO any point in upgrading just for the sake of it.

Cheers

Forgive me if I am mistaken, BUT this sounds ALOT like a feature that Ubuntu(Linux) ALREADY has.

I love the Windows 8 To Go! Oh my gosh! It's fantastic! If Microsoft was the capitalistic enterprise that they are, they should consider partnering up with a flash manufacturer and have Windows 8 on those drives and sell them.

I would imagine those two features will be there, at least the ISO mounting. But I bet Media Center will be there as well since the CP had that in it by default. And I can tell you that Windows 8 is going to have fantastic language support and I think it will have more than 7, about over 100 different languages!
