    Can't update to windows 8.1 , can't downgrade to windows 7

I own a hp pavilion g7 laptop that came with windows 8 pre installed , problem is these days whenever I try to update to windows 8.1 it asks for me to update the PC first , whenever I try to do that for some reason I get stuck at 12% everytime , so I can't update to 8.1 , due to that I can't install these updates , I've browsed for ages for a solution and have found none , and some people say there's a problem with every laptop that was made pre installed with win 8 , so I'm pretty much screwed , I have a windows 7 disk , but I'm not sure if it's going to be compatible with my laptops hardware ..

    tl;dr : I'm stuck with an outdated OS and I can't downgrade to windows 7 , what should I do now ? ..

How long have you waited when it's at 12%? Give it hours, maybe even over night, see if it completes.

    An alternative:

Use Option One here to download and create a ISO file. Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 ISO - Download or Create
Mount the iso file by right clicking on it and selecting Mount. The ISO will be mounted as a virtual Optical drive.
Open that drive and run Setup, see if that works.

I just did this recently to upgrade Win 8.1 to Win 10 on my Laptop. It should work on 8.0 to 8.1 as well.

If not, burn a DVD (use ImgBurn) or create a flash drive using the ISO as input, to install from then try upgrading that way.

If that doesn't work then backup your data (anything you don't want to lose) then boot the DVD or flash drive and do a parallel or Clean Install.

The key is embedded in BIOS and will be picked up automatically when you install/upgrade.

If I understand bitsNpieces of other thread replies by the seasoned gurus here [and elsewhere]: rolling back to Windows 7 is not going to be a walk in the park. Such involves changing UEFI to Legacy, Secure Boot = off, changing GPT to MBR, and of course, installing Windows 7, finding the proper Windows 7 drivers to match your hardware, fine-tuning Windows 7. This is just the short short list.

You are right Roland. As much as I love Windows 7, I would never recommend to downgrade a Windows 8/8.1 machine - too much trouble and a step backwards. Windows 8/8.1 has beautiful facilities to fix nearly any problem - e.g. Refresh.

But if people would take care of their systems and make frequent images, then they would not be in such a predicament.

The thing is , everytime I want to refresh I'm gonna have to apply numerous work arounds when I refresh , due to my recovery partition having windows 8 thus everytime I refresh I go back to windows 8 ..

Before upgrade to Windows 8.1 from the Windows Store, you do not need to install all Windows 8 updates from Windows Update. You only need to install KB2871389 update, then you’ll be able to install the Windows 8.1 update via the Windows Store. Download and install KB2871389 update from link or from Windows Update.

    KB2871389 (direct download link)
    - All supported x86-based versions of Windows 8:
    - All supported x64-based versions of Windows 8:

But if you've opened the Windows Store and you don't see the Windows 8.1 update, then you will need to also install KB2917499 update.

Okay... I had this issue when trying to upgrade an 8 machine to 8.1 and I had to follow a precise bit of instructions after trial and error to make it work.

    1) Open an elevated command prompt. (Elevated Command Prompt - Open in Windows 8 use OPTION ONE)
    2) Run the following command
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

This will take a bit to complete. When it is done, close the command prompt and download and run this Microsoft Fix it Tool: Fix Windows Update Error messages and other Windows Update issues

    3) Go to Control Panel--->System and Security--->Windows update
    Select "Change settings"
Change to "Check for updates but let me choose to download or install"
    Click "OK"
Check for updates. It will come up with an update to Windows update itself. Install it.
*************THIS STEP IS IMPORTANT.****** - Restart the machine twice. The first time you restart, as it is booting back up it will likely show "Applying windows settings" at the boot logo and take a little longer to boot. The second time it will boot as normal.

    4) Go to Control Panel--->System and Security--->Windows Update and check for updates again, and verify the settings we set before ("Check for updates but let me choose to download or install") are still there.
    5) Download WSUS offline update WSUS Offline Update - Update Microsoft Windows and Office without an Internet connection
    6) Launch the "UpdateGenerator".exe file. Download updates for "w62-x64", and deselect the "verify downloaded updates" box. (to save time)

This step can be a bit confusing so here's a screenshot

    7) Click "start" at the bottom left
    8) A cmd line will open. Let it run. It is downloading all the Win8 security updates. It will tell you when it is done.
    9) When it is done, go to the wsusoffline\client directory, and run UpdateInstaller.exe, unchecking "Verify updates". Click start at the bottom left.
WSUS may ask you to "reboot and recall" during this, what that means is to manually restart your computer and then run UpdateInstaller.exe again and it will pick up where it left off.
    10) When it is completely finished it will say "Installation was successful. Please reboot now." Do so.
    11) Once you are rebooted again, open the run dialogue by pressing Windows key+Run, and type wsreset.exe and hit enter. The store will tell you it has been reset. Restart your computer.
    12) Go to the Windows store and try to update to Windows 8.1.
    13) If it still needs you to install more updates, go into Windows update and click "Check for updates". Uncheck all of the .NET framework related updates, but install the rest.
    14) Reboot your computer and try again to update to Windows 8.1

    Hope this helps !
