I shutdown my laptop and left it for a minute or two and when i came back to my laptop was frozen so i held the power button till it shutdown and then when i turned it back on it was taking a long time and then a blue screen appeared with a error it only appeared for a second so i film it and re-watched the video and paused it the error said "unmountable boot volume"

Is there a solution for this error and will i be able to recover my file if the hard drive is corrupt?

can i do this without downloading a install ISO i can just press F8 and select Repair your computer then select command prompt and then execute the commands there?

When is used the command "Bootrec /ScanOs" it said "Total identified Windows installation: 0"

What does this mean?

This result most likely means that Windows installation data in the BCD store exists but bootrec couldn't find any additional installations of Windows on your computer to add to the BCD.

The bootrec /scanos and bootrec /rebuildbcd command will search for Windows installations not included in the Boot Configuration Data (BCD).

Does that mean windows is installed but the commandbootrec /scanos and bootrec /rebuildbcd are not searching in the BCD so it says there is not Windows installation when it accurately is.

Do you have any ideas no how to fix this? I can seem to find a solution for this error :( also i would like to recover my data i booted Ubuntu but it said
ntfs unsafe state i tried to force mount the drive but then i got another error and are there any other Linux OS that can help me recover my data.

Would i need to get a new hard drive?

If F8 works for you, cool... most of the time is does not..

From command prompt type>

bcdboot c:\windows

reboot and see if you get the unmountable volume error

a bad or failing HD does appear to also cause this error message - not saying it is, but..

i tried the command "bcdboot c:\windows" without the installation files and it said "bcdboot Failure when attempting to copy boot files"

i'm now going to boot the installation file from my USB and see if the error persists and if it does should i do a Start up repair?

I have now booted from the
installation files and when into CMD and the error still came up i would like to now do a Start up repair but what will it do and could it make the problem even worse?

you can try doing a startup repair from the booted setup media - you can also run the commands from the setup media by pressing F10 or SHIFT+F10 while on the install - repair screen

so i should now do a start up repair? also will i be able to run CMD while it is doing the start up repair? how long could it take?

i booted WIN81SE_x64 to see if i could access my HD and i was able to browse through my files but my windows installation files where in drive letter E not C but is this because i have booted using WIN81RESE_x64? also should i open Command Prompt and insted of "bcdboot c:\windows" should i do "bcdboot e:\windows" but when i was last using windows the drive letter was C.

Quote from this post:

If the drive letter is incorrect, you will receive the following error message: "Failure when attempting to copy boot files."

[1] E:\windows
The operation completed successfully.

When i did this in the repair menu before it said

Total identified Windows installation: 0
The operation completed successfully.

and then i did
bootrec /rebuildbcd and it said

Total identified Windows installation: 1
[1] E:\windows

Using RE you are booted into memory X:
If your windows directory is now assigned E:
then the command would now be E:

Total identified Windows installation: 1
[1] E:\windows
add installanation to boot list? Yes(Y)/No(N)/All (A)

so the answer would be yes

also do the checkdisk as posted above

Josh, You are not in a windows environment, do not expect what you are working with is the same as windows.. You are in a recovery GUI..

Does the part "ETA: 999:00:00 .." the estimate time it will take to scan the drive?

Should i abort the scan or just wait till it finishes?
