Setting Permissions Messed Up Laptop - HELP!

I got Windows 8.1. Yesterday I messed around with setting some permissions in order to gain access to some folders. I messed up because I ended up with many unresponsive programs and very slow laptop. And many store apps wont open.

How can I reset permissions to default? Or do I run a full repair?

    Welcome to the Forums.

Do you have a Restore Point from before the change? If so that should restore the Registry where all the settings are kept.

If no SRPs, if no backup images of OS, tweaking.com's Windows Repair (All in One), defaults accepted, items 26 & 27 added, normal mode w/security disabled [for that session] or in Safe Mode -- just might restore the folder & file permissions, along with resetting Windows normal operations. Worth a try.

There may be a registry backup in "C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack" but it's probably safer and easier to go the Restore Point route if available.

Yes samuria thats exactly what I tried to do.

I now got a HUGE problem. After I ran the Windows All in One Repair tool, it restarted and it gave a message saying: "Scanning and repairing drive C. 10% done." It stayed this way for 5 hours so I powered down the laptop.

I rebooted and I now get a black screen that stays like this forever. It doesnt boot to any screen or to the desktop.

I cant even boot into safe mode anymore. It just stays black. What do I do now?

Windows OEM or MS blue-disk DVD -- Startup Repair -- may get you back to Windows. I found out the hard way that nothing else [no security programs, no monitoring programs, no office suites, etc.] can be running while Windows Repair (All in One) is running [else WR certainly will run for hours], and I was forced into Windows DVD's Startup Repair. Along with letting WR create both a System Restore Point and Registry Backup before running repairs.

But my laptop has no optical drive and so I got no disc backups. So what do you suggest?

I have no more ideas It's time to let the gurus take over 'cause I'm no help to you at all; my one idea failed to fix the problem.

When no optical drive is available you can make bootable USB tools to use with a flash drive. Also you can back up to flash drive or an external USB drive. Of xourse the time to make the tools is before you need them. Most emergency boot discs are either Linux based or use WinPE which is a small Windows environment.

At this point it seems like you need to find someone with a bootable USB emergency flash drive. Unless you know someone to bail you out you may need to pay a tech to fix you up.
