Why am I getting weird file extensions when saving images?

Recently, I've noticed that when I try saving to my computer images that I find online, I get weird file extensions and appended random characters to the filenames. It used to be that I just got the following 3 options: GIF, PNG, JPG and it was a straightforward save.

Now I'm getting things like these too (notice the SAVE AS TYPE line, and in some cases all the appended characters to the file extensions which I have to remove):

In order to save most of these, I have to remove all the crap that is appended after the correct file extension in order to successfully save in PNG or JPG format.

Can anyone explain why this is happening please? I'm wasting alot of time to have to adjust the filename/extension whenever I'm downloading an image to my computer... hopefully someone has a solution for me?

Those are just random tags that Bing, google and co. give the pictures. For example 10,000,000 people post a picture named "My Dog", how are the going to differentiate between them all?

This happens to me a lot. It depends on the site you are downloading from. Many image hosts attach the random naming with no file ext. All you have to do is default save, open download folder and add .jpg to the end of the name instead of editing the long name or highlight the whole thing and name it AnythingYouWant.jpg as you go. IE; if you download a gallery, you can name the 1st, 01.jpg, the next, 02.jpg, etc. As soon as you add .jpg, you will see the blank file icon change to a picture icon and you can see the thumbnail displayed in that view.

OK mrgeek, i guess by what you're saying it's not just me... your solution wont save me any time as thats already what im doing (that or doing a screen capture for the pesky images that are not right-clickable), but thanks anyway for letting me know you've encountered this too.

Can't you rename the file when you do the Save As?

Can you provide a link to a site this is happening on?

Ztruker, it is probably tagging the file names like that, because of the associated program to view the images.
