Thank you for your reply - much appreciated - I will take a look at your suggestions from the start menu onwards - although I have downloaded pics from camera and scanner with success, but unable to refine, crop, adjust and finally upload to sites which of course "start menu" does not help with ! I am hoping for a relevant steer from this forum.
Well if you don't know about Classic Shell you might want to download and install it. Its a free Start menu program that will let you forget all the windows 8 crap and get your XP desktop back. I really didn't get what MS program you were using in XP. However MS Paint is still there as well as windows Photo Viewer, you should be able to right click on any photo and open with for all your options that will open photos and edit them.

LOL on the 8.i you never know what might come up so I was at least curious

I have tried to do the same with Windows 8i but am convinced I need some pro help/advice to set me on the right path, as so far all I have managed is to raise frustration levels and give up for "another day". Mike
Like you, I went directly from XP SP3 to 8.1. My Microsoft Picture It image tool which I constantly used, was not compatible at all so I had to search for alternatives. After testing a half dozen, this is the one I settled on this one, with the most comparable features and very intuitive to use. Built-in resizer and renamer, crop board with options and basic touchup tools like auto color correct, etc w/o the bulk and complexity of Photoshop. I highly recommend it and it's free - FastStone Image Viewer - Powerful and Intuitive Photo Viewer, Editor and Batch Converter

With FastStone Image viewer you have a lot of settings options and you can email the chosen picture.

Believe me, I tested numerous programs when I went to 8.1 to find one close to what I used for 10 yrs. It was about the only one where I could zoom/crop in proportion by pulling on corners. I particularly like the ability to re-arrange photos in a folder and then re-name them. I do a lot of slide shows and after adding photos, like the ability to put them in the proper sequence and name accordingly. The only function missing is an auto correct although auto correct colors comes close enough to get a quick starting point.

There is an auto adjust - if that is the same thing.

That's what I meant by 'auto correct colors' but my old Picture It ! program had an auto fix that adjusted for brightness and contrast as well as color, all at the same time, with satisfactory results 90% of the time. I find that with FastStone, I still have to use the 'Adjust Colors' and fiddle with the hues and saturation to get just the way I want, about 25% of the time. Still, it gives a good, quick beginning point to most images. But, I found FS to be the best free image software out there, better and more intuitive than other highly recommended like Picassa, Photoscape and Gimp.

In the Microsoft Community, the MVPs all say that Picture It! is not compatible with 7 although some users report intermittent success using compatibility wizard. When I got my 8.1 computer a year ago, I tried this and it said it could not be installed at all due to missing components necessary to run on 8.1. I got my use out of the orig CDs so I'm not unhappy after using it for 10 yrs.
