C drive system compression 4.3 GB could be saved

    Hi there

would deleting the system compression data on drive C: via disk cleanup tools cause any problems.

Anybody have any idea on what it actually DOES.

    Windows 3.1 > Windows 10

In the old days > That would compress unused rarely used system files on drive C and allow 4.3 GB of more free space on drive C

Although you are showing two options - I have not seen in 8.1 > delivery and compression

I don't believe it deletes anything at all. It merely uses NTFS compression on a number of older files that presumably won't be frequently accessed. But "old" is based only on the last time the file was updated. Lacking a last access time stamp (disabled by default on recent versions of Windows) there is nothing else to go by. Such files may be frequently accessed and performance impaired by compressing them. And 4.4 GB seems of little consequence on a modern drive.

It is only on Window 10, not 8.x and only if you have a SSD. It doesn't delete anything but for me compressed Windows by 85% and Program Files by 90%.

This saved me 13GB making my Windows 10 install (excluding pagefile etc) just under 3GB (smaller than the ISO I installed it from). I've got a small disk so it was worth it for me.

Maximum compression /Macrium Reflect in Performance & Maintenance
I just made an image of all local drives which compressed to 16.85 GBs from a total of over 40 GBs. I used maxium compression. Nice shrinkage. I saved it on a 32GB usb. A money saver on usb drive size for backup. I am talking about Macrium Reflect.
I do indeed plan on using this file to see if I can make archive programs divide by zero and crash. :p The image is not edited in any way. I took the screenshot via alt+printscreen, saved it then uploaded it. 35807
