To all end users testing Windows 8: Please vote on the poll and make any suggestions you wish. Any non-members reading this, please take a moment to sign up to the forums so you can let your voice be heard and vote too.

A brief open letter to Microsoft:

Please take into consideration the large percentage of people that are not happy with Windows 8 and the future changes that we've been made aware of through blogs. It is clear and evident that the operating system was designed for touch-based hardware and does not belong on a desktop pc.

The Charms bar pops up all the time when I don't want it to, while doing other things.

Metro is not the kind of environment that is conductive to computing on a desktop or laptop. As an engineering type of mindset that I have, it is clear that Windows 8 is attempting to fix something that is not broken. And we very well know here that things should be made as simple as possible for efficiency, but definitely not simpler.

The choice of signing on to the operating system with a Microsoft account in the cloud is also a poor choice for any user when a local account is surely the way to go. Data privacy and simply being in control of one's own data is more important in computing than Microsoft getting a hold of all this information that it doesn't need to have.

I was a major supporter of the Windows 7 operating system from early in the beta phase up until now, inclusive. I can not support Windows 8 in its current state and that is why I am imploring your company to do better. Even worse, removing Aero Glass is a huge mistake as I see it.

One thing that is quite obvious is that users want choice. Please do not force Metro on everyone and instead, give the end user a choice to disable it completely. Choice has always been a strong suit of Windows. Because of being such a large company, I'd imagine you have some of the brightest minds working on the development of Windows 8. Let some of these folks have a say, because I am sure the final result will be a lot better than how it is now.

I would like to congratulate the company on making all versions of Windows as stable and well-running as they are. In this area, there is perfection and that is something I am thankful for on behalf of the computing community.

In closing, I don't expect my humble letter here to change anything, but as a computing enthusiast, I really hope for it. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

GMan

Sorry GMan, looks like I'm the odd man out. I might be the only person in the world who likes Windows 8, oh well I never did much good backing horses either.

I voted "Yes," but I love Windows 8 and I will buy the full version when it comes out.

1) I agree with the decision to dump Windows Media Center, but feel that a free DVD playback program should be included.
2) The Start button is a great idea and should be returned.
3) You should be able to make the Desktop your default opening screen.
4) You should include a few games that actually work well.

Because all of these shortcomings can be corrected with a little inconvenience, I'm still strongly pro-Windows 8.

The "talking point" of those who claim to like the Metro UI of Windows 8 is...."these people are resistant to "change".

I have never been resistant to change IF the changes makes things work better or more efficiently, Metro UI for the desktop users does NONE of that in fact.

All I can say is if MS doesn't give us the CHOICE of default UI as a one time set up click and stick I will be using Linux Mint on my future desktops and laptops.

Or you can put another flavour in there.

I didn't vote but yes it should be improved. I mean with all the time since the consumer preview I would have hoped they really made things look more visually appealing. I am not opposed to change, I'm opposed to things not working as well as they could and user interface. I also believe function and beauty are important part of design. Right now function and beauty are questionable in this tweak of the desktop. I already can understand they are forcing us to us Metro because we basically load right into it.

I would have hoped the desktop would look more put together. I hope between now and the actual release they get things together. The flatness is just not working with the complexity of the desktop. The flatness can work when there isn't much going on and where things can exist in a simple form but here it just doesn't feel right. They haven't figured out a balance. While using the philosophy behind it will make everything more elegant just making things flat won't. There are still too many chrome items that things with their new much flatter look and it just clashes more than before the lighter aero they used for the consumer preview seems to be much close to a harmony.

Another thing they could do is go into the metro/tablet/mobile side and make it less flat I mean all the elements are not working. The flat buttons(words with a border around it). Using the start screen it just doesn't even look appealing as a user interface. The chromeless text just doesn't work on the busy backgrounds of the tiles on against the metro screen background. It also doesn't work as well when the tablet is vertical.

My Computer

My "talking point" is qualified as I mentioned in my statement if MS REFUSES TO GIVE THE CONSUMER A CHOICE of DEFAULT UI.

If MS does the RIGHT thing by the majority of its customers (current or future) be allowing the choice of default UI then I have no issues at all with Windows 8, if they REFUSE to give that choice (which is easy as pie for MS) then you can be sure I will take my OS needs elsewhere, most likely to Linux based OS since it meets the needs of a desktop user well and it is also FREE.

This is not about emotion, it is simply about which OS meets the desktop users needs. Metro does not make a desktop easier or better to use, in fact is makes it more difficult to utilize. That is a fact.

Never that. You are perfectly entitled to your opinion 100% (as here, when the subject matter is opinionated as opposed to factual based) as everyone else. Good character standing behind what you feel is right.

A couple of hundred years ago I might have been burnt at the stake, straight after Microsoft.

I just looked at my percentage 5.88%, nearly the same as Apple Mac, so I'm still in with a chance.

I applaud your courage but I doubt Microsoft will listen, however I could be wrong.

There were a few spelling mistakes and a few changes (mostly bolded) + the odd word I would leave out.....as follows:

MS don't care what we say.

We are enthusiasts.

We do things with our machines.

MS are only interested in making an operating system for receiving things.

Jab at a big ugly square and something is sent to you - the consumer.

There are things that need to be improved, but this is a beta build. Why are we tripping out over a beta build? Until the Release Preview, we won't truly get a good slice of cake of what Windows 8 is.

I want to note something here. Many people claim that Windows 8 doesn't work well with a desktop or laptop. Yes it does. You simply use it and learn it's new quirks and new UI. There isn't any genuine hindrance using Windows 8 with a mouse.

Yes, Windows 8 is very touch-centric, but that is the future. Windows 8 is Microsoft's true stake at being relevant in a time where people are ditching the desktop and tower form factors for the mobile alternatives. Five years ago, a laptop couldn't truly challenge a desktop, but we live in different times. We live in times where a tablet form factor is packing an i7 mobile processor, 8 gigs of RAM, and a SSD drive that would give many desktops a run for their money and then some. Windows was there when the desktop PC came out, Windows was there when laptops freed people from their desks, and Windows will be there when people choose touch alternatives.

Change is the only constant in life, one must adapt to it.

It's the thread title which is wrong, the voting choices are obvious.
Reading the posts here and elswhere, I am sure a huge majority of users examining this early release, would vote for the first option. I am sure Gman's intentions are just to urge MS along to at least examine some of the nagging issues. Otherwise we could, if no such urging is presented, end up with a potentional Vista. A fine program, which needed improvement, (from outside third party sources as well!9, and eventually came with Windows 7.

Even with my vote, I hope MS does make an option for those who wish to boot directly into the desktop.
The new os should be customizable so everyone can get it setup the way they want it.

As for the start button, I don't think they will add it back, there are, and will be more, third party apps for that.

Hi there
I LIKE W8 and have been using it as a main OS for a while now.

I do admit though --while I don't miss the Start menu I don't like the idea of left scrolling 50 KM each time I want to start an new application -- Metro tiles need to be made more customisable for desktop / laptop users -- also Metro apps need to be able to work in Multi-Monitor / Multi window mode too -- on a laptop etc you often want to display say several documents or web sites on your screen -- especially on a large screen.

On a smart phone --fine but a 60 inch plasma monitor has a lot more "Real estate" than a small tablet or smart phone.

Cheers
jimbo

Yeah, because you're a Desktop user. That's where the main complaints are coming from. Do you really think a college student or a family really need more RAM, HDDs, SSDs, Graphics cards, and NICs or server boards? Really? Every person I know that has a laptop has 4 gigs of RAM and a 2GHz dual core processor and they're fine, some even use PhotoShop on that.
