i do not know why but my desktop picture button has disappeared from my start menu . is there a way to put the desktop picture button back in the start menu ? i noticed that i can bring up a desktop button by hovering the mouse pointer on the lower left corner but that is lame . i just want my desktop picture button back .
also is there any way to have windows 8 open on the desktop ? i do not want to deal with the endless stupid steps required just to open the computer . first i have to raise the unnecessary full screen picture . then i have to type in my password . ( i do not want to type in my password because i am the only person who ever uses my computer and if someone else did i wouldn't care anyhow ) . then i get to the start menu which is filled with buggy programs that never work and now my desktop button has mysteriously disappeared . i would like for windows 8 to have the option to simply open on my desktop without me doing anything . no password . no start menu . no full screen picture that i have to raise ( what is that thing for ? ) . i realize that the windows 8 start menu and password stuff is mainly due to the people who will use windows 8 with tablets and smart phones etc . but i only use my regular ( rather old ) desktop pc . the password screen and buggy start menu are totally unnecessary and a pita . please microsoft -- give windows 8 desktop users the option of booting the computer up to the desktop screen and bypassing all the other wasted steps . i do not want to use the apps on the start menu . i do not need to enter a password because i do not care if anyone uses the pc . and why did my desktop button disappear from the start menu which i do not even need ? thank you for your feedback . sorry if these topics have already been discussed -- i am new to this forum .

I'm not sure I completely understand what's been lost, but you can access the settings for the Account picture in the following way.

Currently, it's not possible to bypass the Metro Start screen without implementing one of the various 'hacks'. Take a look through:

Is there a way to boot and start with the desktop instead of Metro?

dear calico

first let me say that your very quick response to my question was impressive . i did not expect a response so soon - if at all - and especially a response that ACTUALLY WORKED . after following the clearly explained script addition instructions my computer now bypasses the useless full page lift gate picture and opens right to the password screen which tries to log itself on but fails saying " password and user name incorrect " . however with some further tweaking i believe this password nonsense can be eliminated . as far as the script to bypass the start menu and go directly to the desktop -- this mod was a success . the useless start menu appears for about four seconds then a brief appearance of my desktop comes up then my computer goes to windows explorer . i would prefer if the script could somehow just stop at the desktop and not go on to windows explorer but it is definitely an improvement over the way the windows 8 boot up used to perform . i simply minimize the library and my desktop is right there in all its original glory . now i will work on this confusing password situation and hopefully get it to quit asking for a password at all . the password screen appears without the annoying full screen lift gate picture and starts off saying welcome like it is ready to go on in windows 8 . but then it suddenly stops and says i have entered the incorrect password or user name . i think i am getting close to a final perfect boot sequence without the 25 useless annoying windows 8 boot up requirements - thanks to your help and the clear instructions which you referenced . thank you . i will let you know when things are complete .

You can overcome the problem of bypassing the password prompt, which can still persist if using an Administrative account, by doing the following:

1. Select Winkey + R
2. Type compmgmt.msc
3. Select Local Users and Groups
4. Select Users
5. Right click on your user name and select Set Password
6. Click Proceed
7. At the Password prompt, make sure the fields are blank and click OK.
8. Close compmgmt
9. Log out and log in.

Missing Desktop Tile ... Can Anyone Help Me Find It?

My "desktop" tile has disappeared. I followed a tutorial that said to pin the desktop app and then the tile would reappear. It has not. I am getting tired of having to search and find the desktop app to get to my desktop. Any ideas? For the record, I am not the biggest fan of Windows 8 right now.

I hope this hasen't already been suggested but too much to read (above) so I apologize if it has:

Go to the start page
Right-click and select all apps at the bottom right
Right click the desktop app and select "pin to start" at bottom (see screenshot)

Desktop Tile Still Missing

I am not the OP ... just an add-on. Was not sure how to ask my own question, so I jumped aboard his. :D

I am not quite sure if his issue is related. I had already tried to pin the desktop. The tile still has not reappeared.

Any chance either of you are using a custom background or are you using the Windows default theme?

Can either of you do a test and revert to the default Windows 8 theme, reboot, and see if the desktop tile returns to the start page? If not, could you try to right-click the app and try pin to start again please?
