Pc Freezing up randomly either in-game or on desktop

Hi all,

Apologies for not being more specific in the title, there are no error codes and so far, no obvious reasons to the freezes. I'ts a complete freeze, nothing movable, nothing able to close and only fixable by a hard reset. When starting back up again there are no errors and no suggestions for safe mode, simply starting backup again.

I very recently (10days ago?) replaced my motherboard and processor and reinstalled Windows 8.1 onto a newly formatted hard-drive too. Everything else was working fine in my rig so I know it is probably one of the new pieces, but I really can't figure it out.

So far I have checked/tried the following:
  • Seating of all cables, hardware
  • Overheating of CPU (although this can reach high in some games it crashes playing low-req games not pushing it beyond 50C)
  • Drivers - it's a fresh install with all auto updates and manual updates for GPU drivers completed.
  • New install eliminates (almost) the chance of malware/virus etc.
  • Ram has been tested, both with memtest and checking slots by switching around. No effect/problems.
  • Completed sfc/scannow, checkdisk and Dism....RestoreHealth.
  • Have been looking at Event Viewer but not seeing anything obvious. The only critical logs are of me force-closing the system. I may be missing something though as haven't used it much.

There may be more, but it's getting really frustrating now. There's not much on the computer so I could do another install but I'm worried it's hardware. Any help would be really appreciated as it's killing me now.
Please let me know what reports/scans you need.

Hi,

Is your system set to 'high performance' in energy mode? This mode forces the CPU to run at 100% all the time, if your PSU (power supply is to weak it could easily shutdown to system. Could you put your PC specs here so I can check the compatibility?

Steps you could try;

-Make sure you have the latest Windows updates

-Have to installed all your motherboard drivers? Drivers for HDD and CPU?

-Thermal paste of the CPU applied correctly?

-With a fresh install there a small change of a virus but you never know it for sure. Run Windows Defender and / or MalwareBytes(free) and use quick/threat scan and full scan.

If those programs can't find any malware at all you should be safe on the malware side of your system.

-If Defender and MalwareBytes doesn't find anything, try to run MalwareBytes Cameleon, its designed to find malware on a infected pc.

Thanks for the reply, I'll post the specs when I get home but will do the best I can now if you are about:

I'm not sure if my system is set to High Performance. Where is the best place to check that setting?

PSU: Coolermaster Silent Pro 700W Modular
MOBO: Asus m5a88-v evo
CPU: AMD FX 6100
GPU: GTX 770
RAM: 2x 4GB DDR3 1600

I actually decided to run a clean install of windows (again) yesterday. It seemed to "fix" the problem but only temporarily. After 6hours or so of it being on it froze up again, exactly the same.
Drivers are all installed with the exception of a new mobo driver. I was worried that if it did crash again mid update it would pancake the mobo. It's one of the things on my list of things to do though but wasn't sure if that would be a primary culprit?

I resat the heatsink with fresh paste (NOT pasta lol) at the weekend to eliminate that possible cause.

Will try malware bytes later, but as I said, did freshly install and clear the HD again.

Mates are suspecting the CPU but it ran fine in my old system and didn't think that the new CPU/mobo would be needing that much more, if any more power.

I'm running out of ideas now unless it's something faulty.

Hi,

To check if your pc runs at 'high performance' go to your pc settings and then powersave, you can see on what for power plan your pc is running.

Btw, your PSU has 50 amp on the 12V line for your GTX 770, a 770 needs 42 amp to work so it doesn't have much headroom. You should buy a better one for better gaming. Anyway I would update your motherboard if theres a new update, maybe it will fix your problem. Also check if theres a CPU update on AMD's website.

Also search on Google for 'CPU unpark' Windows 8 parks sometimes 1/2 cores of you CPU, with this program you can check if this is the case and correct if you have to.

Will check the performance tab when I get in. What setting is best and does changing from High Performance reduce the ability of the system?

Regarding the PSU, could the GPU be pushing it after a bit of gaming? Any suggestions too, the best that won't break the bank! Needing a new case too really, so this isn't so much of a cheap upgrade - will not be the Mrs favourite!

I did unparking on my W7 system pre-update which helped with Arma 3 etc. Haven't done so on the W8 system but I was using core checker to keep an eye on temps and all cores are being used.

No problem mate,

Your PSU could be the problem yes, specially when your gaming the GPU will push your PSU to the limits and will eat more voltage on the 12V line, that is exactly where your PSU comes to short.

When the GPU needs more voltage to work correctly and your PSU can't handle this it will causes stuttering in games or even crashes. This problem can hapen even when your not gaming
