    How Microsoft Makes Profits

MS makes profits by selling copies of Windows.

The more copies of Windows that MS sells, the more profit MS makes.

Most people buy some version of Windows when they buy a new computer, and MS then makes a profit.

But most people don't buy a new computer until they need one, delaying MS's profits.

If MS can come up with a good new OS, people will buy it for their current computer, thus increasing MS's profits.

If the New OS forces users to buy a new computer powerful enough to operate it, MS will still make an extra profit. But that strategy failed with Windows Vista.

If Win 8 is popular on touchscreen devices, people will buy more touchscreen devices, increasing MS's profits.

By pressuring you to use Metro, MS prepares you to buy smaller touchscreen devices running Win 8, and this will increase MS's profits.

So MS knows what it's doing. It is setting you up to buy various smaller devices that will run Win 8, and thus they will increase their profits.

So in a nutshell, you're saying you don't believe in progress and companies making profits. Maybe they should do what RIM and Nokia have done, just sit back and go broke.
This is an ever changing world my friend, adapt or die.

Companies should make profits, but not at the expense of making its software artificially demanding on hardware so all consumers must fork over more money unnecessarily.

@gman, what about adding an S to the end of a name to sell more products, or changing the headlights, or any number of little tricks companies use. For some reason Microsoft seems to be under the microscope more than any other company on the planet. When Apple does the same thing, everyone thinks its magical or innovative. Apple can do no wrong MS does everything wrong. I just find the whole thing amusing.

Yeah, I always say how dumb it seems to spend all that money on Apple hardware when it cost so much compared to the equivalent pc hardware.

Eh...there are good companies and bad. For instance, along the lines of what you're saying...it is extremely easy to make your average incandescent light bulb last a whole century or longer. They artificially shorten their lives so you, I and everyone else that buys them have to keep replacing them.

YouTube has videos about it and related facts. There's even a firehouse that has a bulb going non-stop since 1901, when the bulb was made before the conspiracy began in 1924: Longest Burning Light Bulb | At 107, still a real live wire - Los Angeles Times

So no, MS is not alone.

Thats exactly what I'm trying to get at, every company has to try to do something to keep you buying, but for some reason everyone dumps on Microsoft for doing it. If they add stuff in, they're wrong, if they take stuff out they're wrong.
Apple can do whatever it likes and everyone sticks up for them. It's just a hate Microsoft world out there, I know, I go to quite a few different forums.
Every blogger on every tech site always makes at least one snide comment about Microsoft, even when most of the review is good, they always come out with something to rubbish MS at the end.

    Or....

You can just upgrade to Windows 8 on a NON-TOUCH system and Microsoft still gets profit. I don't know if you realize, but nothing is being pressured on you.

Exactly right, if people were getting pressured, why is XP still at over 40% of the market. If at the moment you don't like or hate Windows 8, stick with, dare I say it XP, no, I mean Windows 7, but don't tear MS to pieces because it has to stay ahead of the curve.

I think it's a terrible step by them though, to have downgraded the desktop OS experience into one that belongs on some junky handheld screen. Junk should not influence how a real computer is used, nor should future hardware junk (touch on pc) that is only going to prove to be a fad.

Then I get to thinking: How awesome would 8 be if there never were such things as tablets or handheld mini screens and instead, they continued the development as if it really was a computer OS.

Have you seen how much Apple is making out of junky handheld screens, and I don't think they're going to be a fad. Someone actually said that about computers many years ago. If there were no competition, no iPones, no iPads, no Android phones and no Android tablets, I would agree with everything you say, but it's not the case.
Microsoft is getting trashed in phones and tablets and eventually that is going to eat into their market share in a big way. They can stick with Windows 7 and WP7, but in a few years they'll be where Yahoo is now.
