I was playing a particularly demanding, though fully playable game, on my windows 8.1 laptop, before the game stopped responding, and given that it was full screen and there was nothing I could do, held my power button for 5 seconds. When I attempted to boot it back up, nothing would happen, outside the screen activating. I can't get to any kind of boot menu, or anything. I can turn it on and I can turn it off. Nothing else. Any help?

Update: it said something I can't remember failed to Authenticate, and told me to press ok. Doing that turned the computer off.

If you press the Windows key while in full screen mode the Taskbar should pop up.

Try shutting it off & on 3 or 4 times quickly to get a boot screen.

I've turned it on and off about 400 times,.never getting any new results until I left it on for like 45 minutes. That's when I get the "boot image did not authenticate. Press <enter> to continue. Thing to shut down.

Try a Proper Power Reset:
(Step 1) Shutdown and power off the computer.
(Step 2) Once the computer is powered off, unplug the power cord. If it is a laptop also remove the battery. It is important that any way for the system to keep getting power is unplugged or unhooked.
(Step 3) With the power cord unplugged and the battery removed (if you have one), hit the power button a few times as if you are trying to turn on the computer. When you do this and the computer tries to turn on, all the electricity is drained out of the system.
(Step 4) Plug the power cord back in and reinsert the battery (if you have one) and turn the computer on.
All done!
Once Windows is loaded you can continue on with the other steps and repairs.
This trick is used on all forms of electronics. Computers, cell phones, routers, modems, TVs, DVD/Blue-Ray players and so on.
Have you ever heard someone say their computer wasn't working right, so they unhooked it, took it to a computer repair shop and when they got there the system was working fine?
This is because the power had drained out of the system!

David,
I can't do anything flash drive related,i can do literally nothing but turn it off and on.

Cliff,
Your advice, though significantly more possible, didn't change much either. still sits at a black screen for half an hour, before telling me that the boot image did not authenticate, and the only option there being to hit enter, and turn it off, only to begin the cycle once more.

Did you make a recovery drive (first thing you should do after setting windows up)? If yes boot to it(spam the escape key when you power on and choose recovery disk or USB whichever) go to recovery options boot repair and see if Windows can repair it(sometimes it actually even works:shock:).

David,
I'm doing it via cell phone, which is extremely, extremely annoying.

Cliff, even had I had a recovery drive, I don't know if it would be usable. Mashing escape whilst it turned on only brought up a small text-thing saying "ESC... Pause Startup"
Still waiting to see if the end results are the same.

Try this, power down, unplug the power pack, remove the battery, then press and hold the power button for say 5 seconds or more. Now plug the power pack back in, battery too if you want. Then power up and quickly press the key required to access the BIOS. Make and model of laptop please? How big is the hard drive? "boot image did not authenticate" makes me wonder if its maybe using boot to wim image?

Try this, power down, unplug the power pack, remove the battery, then press and hold the power button for say 5 seconds or more. Now plug the power pack back in, battery too if you want. Then power up and quickly press the key required to access the BIOS. Make and model of laptop please? How big is the hard drive? "boot image did not authenticate" makes me wonder if its maybe using boot to wim image?

Good advice Kerry, I told him that in post #7 but it didn't work.
OK, I missed it somehow, I had a couple of threads on the go at once, should know better by now, lol.
That's OK I mean it,. it is good advice. One brings his PC or TV to the shop and "OH! it's working now, but it wasn't at home:eek:"
