HP Elitebook 840 G1 - SSd / Hard Drive Problems

Hey,

I purchased this HP Elitebook 840 G1 today and really like it however am experiencing a really annoying problem with the storage arrangements here.

WIndows installed on a 32GB SSD card that appears to be installed inside the machine and you have access to a 475GB HDD which is to be used for downloads, personal files etc etc?

Once installed on the SSD drive, I had approx 5GB of free space which has been eaten by windows updates, I have changed the download location and program install directoy locations via the registry however when downloading updates the machine keeps saying that the C drive is full and stops the download.

what can I do?

i dontk know what this problem is called so I cant google it and look at what others have done to solve this problem?

Help!

If the problem is freeing up the space on your SSD for Windowes to install its updates, you might try some of the following:

In addition to the last point, use a program like WizTree (I like it, but use whatever you prefer) to see what eats up the most space on your SSD, and act accordingly.
Also, /AppData/* folders can take up a lot of space, but it's much harder to move them, and it's not always stable AFAIK. I wouldn't do it unless there was really no other choice.

Sorry, but this basic advice is all I can give. Hope either this helps, or someone else does.

You have what is called a "Hybrid" drive. The SSD is only used to speed up how fast data is read & wrote from the Hard Drive. You cannot physically access the SSD portion of the Hybrid drive for any other use.

I should have read his specs, sorry. But still, it seems like scott7 needs to clear up some space on the 32GB hybrid drive, is that not so?

well the SSD for this laptop is a separate card that is used exclusively for the OS - its not a hybrid drive..

its really strange....

The 32 GB SSD is meant to be used a cache drive, not as the Windows system drive. With the correctly installed software it will work with the hard drive and do what a hybrid drive would. Who installed Windows on this PC? IMHO it's not setup correctly.

ok - I installed windows, can you advise me the best way to set it up please ? when installed windows I was offered no other destination other than this 32GB SSD, hard drive was not one of the choices .

These 32GB Msata SSD cards do see fairly popular as I have been googling them for the last 30 minutes, they don't seem like a great idea though.

Help ?

I don't get that option and have tried.

You only have the option to use the micro SSD

The hard drive is not listed in the window shown in step 7? Any time I've done a custom install, all hard drives are listed, even if they are unformatted and un-partitioned.

Edit: kinda nvm

I don't wanna butt in while you're (alphanumeric) guiding him, but I just wanna make sure that we're all on the same page here. Can you show your Control Panel -> Device Manager -> Disk drives?
I wonder if alphanumeric means a hybrid setup of SSD + HDD, or an "SSHD" drive? Of the SSHDs I've seen, the SSD componen rarely exceeded 8GB, so 32 seems a bit high. If it's indeed just SSD + HDD, is it really wrong to install Windows on the solid state drive? I could see it working, myself having the same setup, except with 64 gigs instead of half that.

The weird part is of course the HDD install option not showing up during the Windows installation. Anyway, a screenshot of your device manager might make things simpler.

EDIT: Alright, you've moved on while I was writing this and solving my own problems. You may disregard this post now.

It's been my experience that the SSD part of a true hybrid drive does not show up anywhere. That's all done internally with the firmware. The drive itself just shows up like any other had drive. The magic happens inside. The other way of doing it is an MSATA SSD and a separate conventional hard drive. The MSATA drive is an optional extra for that laptop. With this type of setup the caching is done with software. I'm just going by what I've read, My laptop(s) don't use this setup.

it genuinely isn't - I am going to download another iso file and try to create another usb installation disk.

Assuming that I can get it to install - what do I do with the 32GB mSSD card in order to use is properly ?

There should be a utility you download and install from the laptop manufacturers web site that sets it up to cache in the background. Did you change or reset the BIOS settings?

it genuinely isn't - I am going to download another iso file and try to create another usb installation disk.

Assuming that I can get it to install - what do I do with the 32GB mSSD card in order to use is properly ?

There should be a utility you download and install from the laptop manufacturers web site that sets it up to cache in the background. Did you change or reset the BIOS settings?

A guy in this thread -

had a similar concern to yours.

Basically, it seems that he installed his Windows on his HDD, and decided to use his SSD to speed his system up (that's the layout alphanumeric is suggesting AFAU). You might look through it if you want to setup your system in a similar way.
