Hello guys - tons of posts so let me try to answer everyone

alphanumeric - If I create a recovery USB, will I be able to fix the problem? In the pictures I see the recovery drive looks similar to Windows 8.1 advanced startup. If not, why should I make the USB recovery?

lmaneke - The recovery is Windows 8.1 - I THINK. After restoring I did not check, I simply went to Windows Update and installed all the updates. I'm assuming it is Windows 8.1. I bought the computer at Best Buy, it did not come with recovery media such as DVD. I reinstalled Windows with the factory reset stuff already on the computer.

alphanumeric - In your other post you are talking about having me reinstall Windows a different way by accessing recovery partition? Do you think if I reinstall Windows doing it this way will avoid problems?

Sorry if I don't understand, all this information is hard to take in.

Ideally, you should have created Recovery Media when you first got the laptop. Then if your hard drive gets messed up to where the built in recovery doesn't work, you can boot from the Recovery Media and do it that way. I'm suggesting you create it now as a backup just in case things get worse.

My theory is if you access the recovery feature at boot up there is less to go wrong. Versus running it from Windows itself. It may end up being the same thing, I wasn't there to see what it did when you last ran it. If it rebooted and did the recovery then it's likely the same as accessing it during boot up. I've only ever done it from boot up, once, on my laptop.

What I posted in post #20 is doing a Clean Install. That will wipe everything from the hard drive including the factory recovery partition. For most people that is a last resort type of deal. Once you do that your factory recovery option is gone. Some of us will do that just to get ride of the factory bloat that comes with a factory install. I've already done it on my two laptops that came with Windows 8.0.

Its not a laptop, its a desktop.
When I reinstall next week I will try and do it at boot up.
Thanks for the help guys. I'll leave this open in case anyone else has any ideas.

Doesn't matter if it's a desktop or laptop, it's the same procedure etc. I just mentioned laptops because those are what I own that had factory OEM installs. I've always built my own desktop PC's and installed Windows myself. I didn't have to deal with the recovery shemozzle until I bought my first laptop. Anyway, good luck, hopefully it gets sorted out properly.
