Any way to get Hyper-v for 8.1 core?

i.e. I want to get hyper-v installed and functional without paying ~$100 to upgrade to Pro?

I have visual studio, and the Windows Phone emulator (for developing Windows Phone Apps) requires hyper-v.

My computer will support it, I already checked.

These are the steps to enable Hyper-V but only on the Pro version providing your BIOS will support it also.

No offense, but you are feeding me links that I went to myself last night- before I learned that my version of windows does not have hyper-v.

I have 8.1 core, I want to know if it is possible for me to download and install hyper-v without upgrading to 8.1 pro (because I would like to save myself $100.00).

Do you actually have to have hyper-v, or can you just use VMWare instead?

If OP will run a Windows phone emulator, he must have hyper-v and will be forced to buy the Pro upgrade. If just running different OS, VMware and Virtual Box would suffice.

If you're a university student, just ask the Computer Science department or your Bookstore department and maybe you can score the Pro version free of charge.

I need hyper-v to get a feature of visual studio (the Windows Phone emulator) to work. I don't see how a different piece of VM software could help for this. I will just upgrade to pro at some point.

I actually have a windows phone (don't laugh), and can try deploying a finished app straight to my phone to test it out. Not nearly as handy as having the emulator working, but could help.

You guys are looking at this THE WRONG WAY ROUND.

Why not install Windows 10 Trial - you can run either the ENTERPRISE or standard (equiv to PRO) version FREE and the license is till OCT 1 2015 (and will probably be extended with new builds). Current build 9926.
Then you can run HYPER-V and your Windows phone stuff in it to your hearts content. IMO this is a better option anyway because the latest Windows phones will be based on W10 anyway.

Take backup of your present OS though before installing W10. I think this is a neat get around, is free and you'll be developing in the CURRENT environment rather than the old one which is being replaced. There's links all on the W10 Forums if you have any problems installing W10 / HYPER-V etc.

If you need stuff from your current W8.1 system you can Virtualise that while running the W10 system -- so have your Windows phone emulation AND your W8.1 as virtual machines.

ALL preview W10 versions are 100% FREE whatever OS you are running - even Non Windows. !!.

Dual boot shouldn't be a problem either. I'm not fond of dual boot because I find Virtual machine performance is so good these days as not to be needed but there's no problem generally. Install the second OS OS on to a different HDD is probably the easiest and then boot in BIOS. Otherwise generally there doesn't appear to be any problem with "standard" dual boot with the OS's on different partitions on the same HDD.

I have installed Win 10 Enterprise preview to space I freed up on my HDD. I am currently installing Visual Studio (again) as I was unable to launch the previous copy (which is still on my SSD).

I can no longer boot into Win 8.1, and I don't know why. I was hoping to dual boot, but my computer just ignores my Win 8.1 installation. I can't seem to find an option to boot off of my SSD in Bios. I downloaded easy BCD, and added an option to boot from my SSD, but the option is useless.

Any help?
