For some reason, every program I try to install using msiexec, I get an installation that just hangs. Though, I can get past the terms and agreements and program location screen, after that there's no progression, no file copying, nothing. I only get to see [INSERT PROGRAM HERE] is being installed...

Thanks in advance guys.

Could be an issue with UAC not prompting you for permission. Have you tried Right click -> Run as administrator?

Sounds to me that it could be a Memory issue on the motherboard, if no install program will allow an install, or could be a possible motherboard issue. Very possible a hardware issue. Also could be a bad Windows installation

What are your hardware specs? How long have you had Windows 8.1 installed?

You may want to try running Windows Memory Diagnostics, or use memtest86, to check for memory errors.

Do you have a spare hard drive, to install in your system, to install a clean copy of Windows 8 or 8.1 just for testing purposes, to see if the problem is duplicated.

If the UAC isn't loading as it should, there are a few things that may cause that, so I would try those options first, if you can do that.

I just bought myself a new motherboard (ASRock Extreme 4) less than a month ago. Windows 8.1 installation is also less than a month old (did a clean install when installing the MoBo). Also, note that I started getting this problem after Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013 had some issues pertaining to KMS. When I tried uninstalling the software, it would just hang and not proceed uninstalling. From there on, I started getting the same problem everytime I wanted to install a program (using msiexec).

My specs are:

Motherboard: ASRock Extreme 4
CPU: Intel i5 3570K @3,4Ghz
GPU: MSI HD7870 Twin Frozr
Memory: 16GB (dual-channel)
Power feed: Cooler Master Real Power Pro 700w modular

I haven't tried memdiag or memtest86. I'll try that and report back.

Have you tried a system restore to revert the system back to before the Office installation?

Interesting, KMS is only used for volume licensing purposes, or others may use it as a "crack" and create a KMS activator to go on the system to automatically activate the office KMS key every 6 months or so.

Is this a corporate or business edition of Office? or was this a "Cracked" copy of office? A lot of Cracked copies of office will contain malware that can cause a lot of system problems. I have a friend that downloaded a cracked copy of Office 2010 with a KMS activator, and that was a big mistake, as the Antivirus didn't recognize the malware, and a whole bunch of Internet explorer windows started popping up all over the place, with a homepage called "trovi", which I found out is a hijacker program that spreads on the computer. We were lucky enough to be able to do a system restore to revert the computer back to before we installed it, and that fixed the problem.

I'm wondering if you have a similar problem. If that was cracked software, then it could have possibly altered your Operating system software, not allowing any installations of programs.

Its a possibility, but you could certainly give it a try, if you haven't already tried.

I have the same issue and it affects windows updates too. A restart fixes the problem temporarily.

I've heard so many users have problems with asrock boards. I stay away from them and only buy asus. Never had a problem with their boards
