Using DVD instead of USB as Recovery Drive in Windows 8.1

    Hi,

as a new convert to Win8.1 I have slowly been setting my system up and one of the main things is system security incase of any unforeseen mishaps.

This has led me to create a Recovery Drive and through many hours of Googling I have found that Win8 had the ability to write the Recovery Drive to DVD but since Win8.1 this option has disappeared to be replaced by using only a USB flash drive.

I have used a USB stick and made my Recovery Drive but I have been wondering if instead of having to keep an otherwise useful USB stick secure with such a small amount of data on it, can I not just copy the files from the stick and burn to a DVD and use this DVD to boot from?

DVDs are very cheap compared with USB sticks.

    Regards..,

I would like to point out that the recovery drive that is created by windows - is a recovery tools drive - about 300MB.. Do not rely on it to repair windows or save any of your personal date.. There are many programs that allow you to make system backup images.. Marcium, Aomie, Acronis

True the recovery disk only works if you have a recovery partition or better yet a custom refresh.

As I installed a clean install of 8.1 from disc myself, I know that there is no recovery partition.

Next job, create a recovery partition, thanks guys.

In respect of my original question, if I burnt the files created on the USB Recovery Drive to a DVD, would the DVD not work as a recovery media the same as the USB stick would?

    Yes..

Create a custom refresh image - as per link provided.. when you are happy with your windows installation..

We may be able to use this image as your Refresh / reset image to be included on the DVD

Sorry, I might be misunderstanding your reply but is that:

Yes, the DVD would work exactly the same.

    or

Yes, the DVD would not work?

    Thank you for your patience
