Specific changes when upgrading from 8.1 to 10

Hello everyone! This is my first post on this forum, so I'll apologize for my lack of knowing exactly all the forum's rules. I hope that I have posted in the right section.

I've been using windows 8.1 for more than one year and it's been a really awesome experience. The OS was way more stable than 8 and it was just perfect for me. However, knowing that Windows 10 has just appeared, my interests also changed. Because Windows 10 is offering right now free upgrades for the 8.1 users, I was thinking about upgrading it too. The only things which stop me to upgrade right away are about saving. Let's say for example that I have lots of shortcuts put in a specific position on my desktop and lots of apps and games which have been running without any problem right now. I'm using the 64-bit version, but even so, is it possible to lose the compatibility of some applications or even to lose the applications itself if I upgrade to the new version? Or everything that I have been using right now will remain untouched and the only things which are going to change is the windows itself without modifying the apps files and so? It's not like I want a clean install. I only want to upgrade to the new version, but also keep all of my files untouched.

Considering this, could you please tell me if my worries are useless or should I be prepared to reinstall most of my apps again because I'm thinking of upgrading? Thank you!

Win10 is still in testing - no free upgrades have been offered.
Yes, a free upgrade is offered - see my next post below

You can download the preview releases for free and test drive it.

Any new release always carries a little risk of something not working that did work in a previous release.

Take a look at Windows 10 Forums - lots of members are and have been testing ten for a few months. There are some threads that detail applications that have been tested and bugs found.

You can test drive Win10 either in a dual boot or in a Virtual machine without sacrificing your Win8.1 install.

I suggest that you not update your system yet - Win10 is still a test system. When Win10 IS released, I think you will have a better install if you start clean, not upgrade. There are a lot of new features that make Win10 more than an upgrade - it's a new OS.

You have a live Win8.1 system - keep that until Win10 is released to the public.

There is a free upgrade for Windows 10 from 7 and 8.1. Microsoft has announced it, they just haven't announced when it will be released.

We all paid to upgrade from 7 to 8.. So I would not now think that upgrading from 7 to 10 is free.. There is a free preview release.. that can be installed on 7 and 8 machines..

The main reason for 10 is to attract the business customers off of 7 and to get them to purchase 10, because the metro interface of 8 was a big business OH NO - NO WAY failure on MS's part..

It is far too early to consider an upgrade to Windows 10. The expected release date is October 2015. Right now you have only very early test versions which should not be used for a production system.

MS announced today that a FREE upgrade from Windows 7 and 8.1 to Windows 10 will be available for 1 year after the release of Windows 10 final version.

That's right! It will be a free upgrade. Per your other comments, are you trying to tell us that it won't be a free upgrade?
