    System Restore not turned on

I have had my W8.1 Tablet for about two months. Today I thought I had a fleeting glimpse of the System Restore Information file (which I thought is supposed to be hidden?) and it was empty. This caused me some concern, I eventually located the Control Panel and found that System Restore / Protection was turned off, so I turned it on and initiated a manual Restore Point. It is probably the first one! Hopefully I am now safe in this respect.

Surely it is not usual for a new computer to be supplied with Restore turned off? I took it for granted that it was working away automatically. I am no expert but I do know about Restore --- many new to computers will be unaware of this risk wont they? Am I right in suggesting this is something everyone should check?

It's like the air pressure in your car tires. It's something that most drivers just take for granted, and that's a HUGE mistake.
You don't know for sure, unless you check it.

Yes, System Restore is there for a very good reason and it can surely save the day for you, if you have a problem in Windows that you didn't have the day before.
I really hate it, when a customer calls with a problem that I know can quickly be fixed by a System Restore, and I get to the site and find that some odlid has turned System Restore OFF! Then things just get real complicated, real quick!

To assure that every time I need a recent restore point, there will be one available, I run a small script in my Startup folder to force a new restore point every time I boot up my PC. If I reboot five times in a day, I will have five new restore problem!

I do a full drive backup at least once a week, so I don't need the old restore points if I have a full drive backup in the can (so to speak), so before I do my backup, I delete my old restore points. I do all that from a DOS boot CD, so there are no 'permissions' preventing me from deleting those old restore points.

    Cheers Mate!
