Why can't Microsoft jazz up these Metro Tiles a little and make the UI more interactive? These tiles are so boring and clunky and slow!! You want to see some hot tiles? Go here:
Cooliris | What Is Cooliris - Media browser plug-in features
These bad boys rock. Microsoft should buy them if necessary and insert the software into Metro's UI.

The point of Metro is to be chromeless. Would you care to explain how they are clunky or slow?

I think he means dull and not flashy.
If that's the way Microsoft wants it's Metro interface to look I would be shocked. I doubt this. So did you look at Cooliris? You see those colorful 3D tiles that can be pushed and pulled from anywhere on the screen? You see how beautiful they look on the desktop background and how smoothly they scroll around? Then go to your W8 Start screen and observe those big, dum, square, plain, simple tiles that can only be pulled from the taskbar area forward and reverse only. That's what I mean. Microsoft could easily fix this, I can't figure why they would leave the Metro UI like this.
Update: I just clicked on the definition of Chromeless. Now I'm all confused as to how they can think Metro UI is sharp and clean!

Chromeless = dull, clunky and slow then, without sparkle or bling, uniform and featureless - the difference between Chinese national costume before and after the Cultural Revolution. Give me dull khaki cotton instead of vibrant silk anyday.

It does not matter if your screen is covered with smudgy fingerprints - there is no detail to be seen anyway - we might as well go back to 800x600 pixels.

Sad.

LOl. Keep this thread with humour. The first link only gives other links to the word. Most other links on the web do the same thing. New words are being "evolved" daily, and in this case, it wasn't evolved, it was invented by Microsoft. Not a bad invention, as I think the more previous similar expression/word was "without eye candy"

Use several different computers during a day, so specs are irrelevant.
The tiles in Windows 8 are served poorly compared to the Windows Phone 7. It doesn't look fantastic at all unless customized to have contrast colors. For example, black background with a vibrant blue for the tiles and blue highlight colors for other UI elements. I actually have that setup right now. It matches my Windows Phone's Nokia blue tile color and it looks fantastic! It's an awesome day to put your phone next to your desktop monitor and see the similar UI. This is the future...

As for chromeless and sharp and clean, that is metro. Metro design kind of takes out things that should be intrinsic to us all. For example, no search box on the Start Screen. Search is so present, we don't really need that UI element. Metro design is really about doing something different. Even in metro apps, there are no window control buttons, but gestures to size an app, or to close it. It's different, that's the point.

But on the Desktop, I'm concerned that Microsoft isn't truly applying the ideals of metro design to Windows Explorer properly...

They are not applying it well at all on the desktop. On the desktop especially when everyone is using all that chrome for their logos unless they especially create a chromeless version and even if they do that it will not work on the desktop because their is too much going on. They should definitely adapt the simplicity of the metro design. But what they have done so far with big flat tiles and the odd half-baked desktop it seems like they don't even know how to translate their own design principles into the desktop. While on the phone the flat tiles might be nice on a desktop where so much is going on or even on a tablet you cannot have things look so flat because it is difficult to distinguish certain things.

The "brains" of microsoft do so often fail. Maybe it has grown so large, that the left hand has become separated from the right hand.
The most boastful feature, and possibly the only one of consequence, when you consider the forum feedback so far, was the Metro interface. Forgive me , Microsoft, but if I had been in charge of development, this would have been my priority, before launching it on the public, for reaction. Most other parts of the OS are good enough, and not so different from Windows 7, in the final analysis. But the Metro should have been, at this stage, totally customisable and, at this stage, with a quick switch alternative desktop/start menu. I am certain that, had that been done, members of forums worldwide, would be falling over their posts with joy.
