Solved Notification area settings do not "stick" after reboot

Hello. I have a problem with the notification area settings: they do not "stick" after reboot. The program icons that I want to see in the notification area are hidden, but some system icons like sound, network, power settings and action center icons are not hidden (I guess it's the default behavior).

How do I make windows save the changes to my notification area and keep them once I reboot ?

No I have not. I need to have the overflow section of the notification area, because there are some programs that I don't care about, while the ones I care are placed in the notification area for quick access.

Here's a picture of my current configuration:


Which get's cleared to this default configuration:


And any other programs that I may run after the reset are put in the overflow section of the notification area.

For the icons for programs that you don't want, double check the program's settings to see if there may a "Remove icon from tray" or "Remove icon from notification area" type option to remove it with.

I've found that the default Windows system icons (sound, network, action center, etc...) don't always mind what you have set.

I use "Notification Area Cleaner x64" to cleanup my old tray icons and reset anything that might have become corrupt. It's designed for Windows 7, but works in 8.1 too with the problem that you have to reboot after to refill the system tray with the icons you want, and have to reset them, but it does get rid of the old uninstalled ones.

As with the default icons, that darn little "Input Indicator" likes to show it's face now & then, the little devil.

Unfortunately this is not the case, as my notification area was working fine with no need to fiddle with any of the program settings.

Unfortunately (again), this is didn't fix my issue. Ran the .bat file, waited for the explorer.exe to reload, set my desired configuration of icons (like in the 1st picture in my last post), rebooted and still the issue persists...

I think the cause of my issue is due to corrupt or missing registry keys.

I would like to ask any of You who are running Windows 8.1 to show a print screen of the following registry key path:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

If what Cliff posted doesn't help, then you might see if resetting the notification area back to default in case of corruption, then set them back to how you wanted to see if they stick then.

Try dragging and dropping them manually.
