Title says it all. Don't confuse it with changing the language, but customizing language names.
Don't ask me why.

I don't mind hardcoding or doing 'hard' stuff. Just give me some directions if you think it's possible.
Thanks.

Are you talking about changing the language of your Windows 8 user name?

Why would you want to do that? :p

Where do you want the name of the language to be presented differently.
I don't know if there is a global entry in the regisitry or if there is even a registry entry with the name of the language

So you want the way the name of the language is presented to change
English to be MyNativeTongue
French to be FailedFrenchiIHS
!@#$%^&* to be MustBeAsian

Do you switch languages often?

Haha exactly!
Actually, believe it or not, name of my language is displayed wrongly! I would like to offer people the way to change themselves manually until someone from Microsoft decides to do it.

But have no idea where could that be stored, and if possibly I could change it.
Thanks for help!

Obviously not :)

Have you written an irate message to them at the profound insult of not naming your beloved country correctly? :)

At a guess, I would think this would take quite deep knowledge of the underlying system to change that ...you probably need a serious Windows geek. :)

That's exactly about it. And I am not a guy able to make such a revolution, I would more easily prove that aliens built pyramids than this :p
So I guess I should just keep digging and see if I can hack it and let the people know, if they really want to do it, how they can do it.

So you want your language (lets say English as you didn't mention it) to always say ENGLISH even if you changed the display language to say French. So you want the system to check instances of the word Anglais (the French word for "English") and replace it with the word English right? And perhaps Les Etats Unis to United States at the same time? And the names of the menu items that let you get there to change it?

No, you can't. Similarly if you lend your mobile phone to someone and they change the language to Arabic then (assuming you don't read Arabic) you'll find it irritating to change back. Perhaps not irritating but at least (in my experience anyway) time consuming.

Not really, I don't want that.

I want, for example, to change English to: Engles (or any custom value). It will display English words just normally as it would usually, just the name in the language bar would be different.

I gave my best, but I must ask for help now.

Not sure how I should filter processes in Process Monitor. If I do it like from example you provided me (RegSetValue), then nothing happens when I change the language (win+space or by clicking the language name and choosing another one) for example. No new entries in the processes list.

If I don't filter, I have no idea if it's adding anything related to languages since it's adding tons of processes there.

Don't give up. While there might not be an easy way to do it, the folks around here know a lot that might make it possible.

admaf is suggesting that you use procmon to identify what changes when you change a language, that will narrow down where you might be able to affect a change in the registry so the name of your language is presented correctly.

Let me make sure I actually did understand the issue, I'll simplify the example

Let's say that your language is English
In the list of languagesit is Engilsh

English vs. Engilsh

I think that's the issue, even English might not be the language in question.

It might help if you identified your language, both in English and in your native tongue

French | Français

Nepali | नेपाली

Tagalog | Ha - they didn't have Tagalog on translate.google.com
Filipino | फिलिपिनो / Philipinō

Hebrew | עברית

Well, that was fun, you get the idea. I used Google translate and copy/pasted the non-English representations
You should be able to type the name of your language in your native tongue as you see it in Windows, and do the same copy/paste operation. Word or any other test editor should do the trick.
Why? If you type the language in English, I won't find it in Windows (maybe I will, but I think they present things in native tongue) so I'd like to see what you see and look on my install.

edit: I was wrong, the English name of the language is available, both are presented the native language name is in the box and the English name of the language is below the box

If you want, you can just post a screen shot of Control Panel Languages showing the language name.

Not to confuse people anymore, this is what I want exactly:

HHq4gRT.png

It will still be English, just it will be named differently.

Not sure what was your intense, it's late, maybe I get the things slower at the moment :)
With, what adamf suggested I stuck for now and would appreciate further help.

I'll stay subscribed - it will be an interesting discussion.

I could see from procmon that changing the input language updated HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Local Settings\MuiCache\1bc\52C64B7E

Inside are the names of your languages - I changed Afrikaans to Afrikaans1 with regedit

Log off and on (you have to do that) and it then picks up the new language name.

The keys are named @Winlangdb.dll,-nnnn where nnnn is the language number - for Afrikaans (1003), US English (1121) etc. Only the languages you have defined in language preferences are shown.

Note that the first time I backed up that part of the registry and then restored it back. This resulted in my language bar disappearing completely and I had to restore so I'd recommend you don't do that. Just remember what you change and change it back if you want.

I couldn't figure out where to change the 3 letter abbreviation (eg AFR ) but hopefully the name will help :)

Thanks adamf, appreciated. Yeah, I'll still need to locate that abbreviation, but should be hiding somewhere similar as the language name.
