Logon on waking from sleep mode

When I configured the Metro e-mail program on my laptop the system announced that it was increasing the security settings on my computer. (Thanks for nothing for not telling me what changes were being made). Afterwards, the laptop goes into sleep mode if unattended for more than 10 minutes. In Control Panel/Power Options I have indicated that the laptop should go into Sleep mode after 4 hours, whether plugged in or on battery. Why does the system ignore this setting?

Also, when the laptop is awakened from Sleep mode, the system requires me to enter my password again. In Control Panel/Power Options/System Settings the "Password protection on wake-up" setting is set to "Don't require a password" . Why is the OS ignoring this setting?

Some advanced settings may need adjustment,
try Control Panel > Power Options > ((Change when the computer sleeps) Edit Plan Settings) > Change advanced power settings > then edit the sub menus from the + plus sign sub settings

Recheck to see if any changes have been applied.
Recheck any changes after a logoff, shutdown or reboot.

I checked and rechecked these settings, rebooted and checked them again. The system continues to ignore the settings. "Password protection on wake-up" is set to "Don't require a password" but the system demands a password on wake-up.

I have found that the advanced power settings can be touchy as you THINK you change them but by using the mouse to scroll down, you are actually flipping the setting. Turn off hybrid sleep and click on the the highlighted box to toggle the password on wakeup

In addition to the above good recommendations,
you could try a simple test that works on my system... which is,
go to the charms bar (right side of screen with mouse or WinKey + C) > settings > (below) more PC settings > USERS > Sign In Options > Create a Password > (delete what is there) Put the cursor in and press the space bar once > click NEXT > click FINISH

see what happens when you reboot

You guys are offering great suggestions, but I have a feeling that Microsoft disabled the ability to (re)sign on without password when set to a Microsoft account.

It's only a feeling and not a tested fact, though - so take with a grain of salt.

I think Windows Live might be the culprit as that has the same password as my logon. I did manage to turn OFF my password completely so I can boot without typing anything. NOT recommended for a laptop that moves around. I found out how to do that somewhere in this forum (and am going to have to learn it AGAIN as I am building a IB machine next week).

    Unwanted Sleep, unwanted password request

OK, this partially duplicates an earlier post from me, but I never found an answer and now I am having the same problem on two computers, my laptop and my desktop machines, so I am getting really PO'd.

My two PCs go into Sleep mode if unattended for more than 30 minutes. When I wake the computers from sleep mode, they demand my password. Neither behavior is wanted.

In Power Management, "Put the computer to sleep" is set to "NEVER" and in Advanced Power Managment, "Require a password on wakeup" is set to 'NO". What part of Never and No doesn't the OS understand?

For both computers, these unwanted behaviors started immediately after I installed and configured the Metro e-mail App. I subsequently uninstalled the App because its synchronization behavior was really flakey, but the altered behavior with regard to going into Sleep mode and demanding a password to emerge from Sleep still remained.

I have a strong suspicion that some wise-ass at Microsoft thought that making these changes automatically would be a good idea to protect my e-mail from prying eyes, but I really would like to be able to make this decision for myself. I suspect that I may need to go into the registry to make these changes but I have no clue where to look in the registry.

As stated in the other thread, I *think* that it may have something to do with signing the operating system into Microsoft account instead of local.

Can't say for sure as I don't sign in to MS ever. Since I've never seen this problem, that alone supports my above thoughts.

You can try to see what happens if using a local account.

I am reluctant to try this. Using a local account instead of the MS/Windows Live account eliminates some of the most important advantages Windows 8 has over Windows 7.
