What will happen to Win 8 Preview when the "real" one is released ?

When the " real " Win 8 is finally released to the general public, can I still use the " preview " version ?

The Consumer Preview will expire on January 16th 2013.

Technically, you could, but you will have no updates for it. That could be alright, but you could face security holes without them.

    Hi there
Perhaps you need to go back to the Dictionary to see what the word USE means. !!!!! (not trying to be nasty BTW).

Yes you are correct in that you COULD technically use W8 CP preview but I believe it will re-boot every 2 hours and also only limited tasks will be available so whether that constitutes "USE" is a moot point.

I'd suggest that people while enjoying W8 CP preview now find an another alternative solution before Jan 31.

    Namely

    1) Buy and install W8
    2) Revert back to W7
    3) Revert back to XP or previous version(s) of Windows (if you can get them to run)
    4) Install a Linux distro
    5) Buy an Apple computer
    6) forget about having a computer at all.

    6 perfectly feasible choices.

    Cheers

    Hi Jimbo,

Let me add one more item to your list:

    7) Change the system time to a year or two back. The software checks and doesn't see the the expire date for a while.

Of course you must set Windows to never update the time. The obvious downsides to this are your new files will always have the wrong date and time in their properties. You will never get any updates. You will always be stuck with a beta level software.

I know a few people who have done this and are still running Windows 7 RC to this day. That expired well over a year ago!

All this for the sake of saving a $100 bill American. Yet you should see all the money these guys have sunk into their rigs!

    Hi John
That actually doesn't always work either -- especially if you don't also set the Hardware BIOS clock back before you re-boot Windows as well.

Note also some Windows sites automatically get time from various time servers out there now as well.

It also can totally hose up downloads from normal websites and other LEGAL software you might have installed -- and certainly if you have any subscription stuff like Netflix. It will probably hose up email dates and times too --- I certainly wouldn't use this option even as a last resort. !!!

    Cheers

    Hi Jimbo,

You're absolutely right on all points. These guys are constantly changing things on their rigs to maintain the past everywhere. Seems such a pain in the bum!

I personally like to keep all of my stuff up to date and LEGAL. I am one of those guys who will reserve a copy of Win 8 as soon as the release date is known and pick it up from the store on that day.

Well, my definition of could was this, get an "under the rug" time bomb remover utility and get rid of the time bomb, bihourly restarts, and activation issues.

If Windows 8 'preview editions' follow the same path as Windows 7 beta/RC, they'll work fine until a month to two weeks before the expiry date -January 16th 2013 for Consumer Preview - at which point they'll start to shutdown every two hours. However, I wouldn't recommend continued use of CP. At the very least, switch to the Release Preview...
