Cannot delete file name too long

    Hi All,

All the best for 2015 to everyone.

Got a Word file from my back up that has an overly long name. It's of no use to me and I want to delete it, bit is says "Cannot delete file name too long"

It won't let me open, rename, move or delete it. I've tried to delete it through a command prompt but that does not work, even in safe mode.

How can I get rid of this little bugger?

    Cheers

    Rob

    Hello Rob,

If you haven't already, you might see if the free program Unlocker may be able to delete the file for you.

I did look at Unlocker, but I didn't want to pay to get rid of one Word file. Any other suggestions?

    Cheers

In the past, renaming the multi-character directory names to a single character name let some files be deleted.

For example, \long\directory\file is renamed to \l\d\f.

You could try changing the name of the folder in which the file is present and see if that makes it accessible. Or try using 7-zip, which is able to read too long file names, and allow to rename them, then delete it.

    Hey Cliff,

Can't rename the folder of the file. But I will try 7Zip and see if that works. I went to try Unlocker, but there was no option but to pay for it, so I didn't bother, not for one file.

    Cheers
