Windows Power Shell

Powershell has been around for quite a long time but in Windows 8, especially Server, it's the primary administration console. There are two interfaces for Powershell, the 'standard' UI, which is what you've found and the Powershell ISE (Integrated Scripting Environment) which can be found in Control Panel/Administrative Tools. Either can be launched directly by using WinKey+R. For more information, take a look at the following:

The 'standard' Powershell' console is a good replacement for the usual command prompt.

Hello Vince53.

Here is my contribution.

Removal of hiberfil.sys (the hibernation file or image of your memory)

You can also execute this simple function with the Command Prompt (Admin) that you can get by right clicking the bottom left corner of the desktop (Windows 8 CP)

If you ever do disk imaging and you find that the file hiberfil.sys adds alot to the size of the image,
which is unnecessary to backup inside of the disk image,
especially if you have no need to hibernate,
you can easily remove it from the system.

>> control panel -> Administrative Tools -> (right click) (select Run as Administrator) Windows Powershell

c:\ powercfg.exe -h off

hiberfil.sys is now removed from your system

to restore hiberfil.sys

again Run as Administrator...

c:\ powercfg.exe -h on

For those unfamiliar with hiberfil.sys,
it exists if your system has hibernation enabled.
It is a system file and cannot be seen unless you go to folder options and unhide hidden files and unhide protected operating system files.
If someone tries the recommendation above to remove hiberfil.sys which can get to several gigabytes,
one can see the file be removed and restored from its default location in the root when the command is executed.
Otherwise, executing the command does not provide any evidence of action unless you go look for it.

cheers

Yeah it does. It disables the ability to hibernate.

Unless you meant running off first and then also running on after...

yes, yes.
removing hibernation was the goal.
If you do not need it, why have it.

One can always restore it.

I have no use for hibernation and the file size is about 7 gigabytes

Oh heck ya...for desktops, it's practically a must to rid of it. It's always slightly smaller than the installed system RAM. So I'm guessing you have 8 GB.

Good backup tip though, for sure. :)
