Solved Sony Vaio laptop not booting up(Windows 8/8.1)

Hi,

I have a Sony Vaio Laptop (Model SVE14A3C5E) with Windows 8/8.1 pre-installed. My laptop froze when doing a restart so I manually shut it down holding the power button(It froze on the screen saying 'Stopping Services'). When turning it back on it started to do an Automatic Repair but after a few minutes it said it was unable to repair the PC and said to fix it using one of the other Windows 8 options. These options did not work for me.

Unfortunately I did not back up the PC so I would like to try and recover the files.

Now it just boots up to Windows boot manager(status/error: 0xc000000f) and asks for the Windows installation disk which I do not have.

I read on a forum that you can recover and back up the files by booting up in Ubuntu 14.04 from a CD. I managed to do that after changing the Boot Priority to 'Optical Disk Drive'. However when looking at 'Desktop' I could not find any of my files in 'Documents' or any of the other folders. I also tried Hirens Boot CD but could only boot up in Legacy mode(BIOS) and was unable to find my files again when booting up to mini windows xp.

Could this mean the hard drive has wiped my files or are they hidden away somewhere? Or broken hard drive?

Anything to sort this will be greatly appreciated.

Regards

David

Hi David,

Looks like you need boot media with data recovery options.

Seems you don't have any, and you can't create them if you can't get into windows.

Hi majestic jaguar, no I haven't will that recover data even if I can find it my files at the moment?
Well running Ubuntu and looking through the on-board file manager won't display your data because it's stored elsewhere through a directory of other Windows 8 folders.
All I did to find that link was I Googled the error code you provided.
Also if you go into Ubuntu and navigate to the file manager, do you see something along the lines of Windows or Win 8 on the left pane? Like the Win XP shown in this photo:

Recuva is pretty good, as is the last free version of power data recovery.

We have yet to confirm if his data is actually deleted or if he is just having trouble accessing it.

Yep. possible he is looking at the running ubuntu, rather than mounting the win8 drive and looking there. Not likely, David doesn't appear to be a complete beginner.

@ David,

What bit version of Win 8x do you have installed?

You can create install media if it is needed, but since this is an OEM device, you might be able to recover using what's already on the box.
It might be a good idea to create it anyway...

Let me see what I can find - but so that I don't chase an option you've already tried ...
What options did you you try?

Try accessing the 289GB volume. Let me know if you see about 15 folders, one being "Windows"

To clarify you go into the Windows folder and all you see is a logs document?
