You can create install media if it is needed, but since this is an OEM device, you might be able to recover using what's already on the box.

It might be a good idea to create it anyway...
See OPTION ONE in: Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 ISO - Download or Create

Let me see what I can find - but so that I don't chase an option you've already tried ...
What options did you you try?
Here's how you can create the install media - from the official MS ISO.

My post must have been buried in the flurry of activity.

Either that or I'm being completely ignored
Sorry I didn't see that. I will have a look at that now, thank you for the help

Hi, I have booted it up but is there a certain program I should try to use?

I'm not sure what SIW2 gave you. Can you explain what it is?

I'm not really familiar with the use of SIW2's tool.

As per my previous post, I am still of the opinion that chkdsk wil reveal whether that windows partition is in a workable state or not
(I suspect that's the reason Ubuntu did not see it - it won't mount a partition it sees as "in an unsafe state")

    - that needs Windows installation media tho' - unless you have the full system32 folder on WinPE.

I'm sure SIW2 he will advise futher regarding recovery.

Its a boot media that has programs such as Recuva and MinTool Power Data Recovery on it.

Is this what you're referring to? [FIX] Error "0xc000000f - The Boot Selection Failed Because A Required Device Is Inaccessible" - Kapil Sparks
I tried this but do not have a set up disk yet so skipped first 2 steps.
In the cmd prompt I put 'diskpart' and then 'list volume'. It came up with 6 volumes all with healthy status and I could see my C drive. I then left it and typed 'chkdsk /r /f c:'

It came back with 'this type of file is NTFS.'
    '0 bad file records processed.'

It has a familiar windows explorer type interface. You should be able to see your win8 drives from there.

It also has data recovery and partitioning tools if you need them.

What are you trying to do?

I was under the impression you wanted to copy data from your existing win8x installation to somewhere safe?

If you can't see your files., then try running the data recovery tools, they may be able to find things you can't see. Running them won't cause any damage.

I would suggest recuva and/or powerdatarecovery, they are both good.

( You will notice partition guru is in there as well. That is the free version, which means partitoning works, but data recovery is not functional on pg free version. )

Or, if you think it looks like everything is there, and it is just a booting problem, you can probably fix it using that little thing I wrote called nt6repair.

If you get really stuck, you can fire up Ammy and let somebody link up and take control of your pc.
