    Formatting SSD with EXfat? NTFS?

    Hey guys,

I never have figured out what is the best format table to use..

    -I have a 64gig (m.2 NGFF) SSD (mydigitalSSD)

I am about to format it. Is there any benefit or reason why I would format it with either EXfat or NTFS?

Obviously I want speed.. so I'm not sure which to choose..

I would go with NTFS, especially if you're installing an OS on it.

ExFAT was designed for use with external drives. If you intend to install any OS Vista and later it MUST be formatted as NTFS.

AGAIN.. thank you for the answers.. BUT!!! does anyone actually know the reason besides "if i install OS" onto a drive it should be NTFS??

of course any installed Operating System should be NTFS!

I want to know why I would ever in, the entire world, would I choose EXfat instead of NTFS for a drive that is installed inside my laptop as a secondary storage drive..

also ,ok, and with that said, I have 4 EXTERNAL hard drives that i did format to NTFS.. but i am never going to install Windows on them.. so should I reformat them to Exfat??

    see what i mean! ..

looking forward to the new answers now.

I have all my external drives formatted to NTFS. I would never use Exfat unless I knew of any advantages over NTFS or if the removable storage device at hand required it.

Vista and later operating systems MUST be installed on an NTFS volume. An attempt to install on any other will fail.

There really is no good reason to format a local drive as anything but NTFS. The only exception would be for compatibility when dual booting with a non Microsoft OS. Formatting a local drive as ExFAT isn't normally even an option.

NTFS was never designed for external drives and has some issues when used for such. To remove an NTFS drive you MUST use the safe removal option. Otherwise there is a serious risk of data loss or corruption.

ExFAT was designed as an enhanced version of FAT32 with some of the advantages of NTFS with fewer problems. At present only Vista and later and some versions of the Mac OSX natively support it. XP is compatible with an installed driver.
