Brand-new HP Pavilion 10-e010nr laptop is incredibly slow

I recently received a brand-new HP Pavilion 10-e010nr laptop for Christmas. I went through the setup process and it went smoothly. I quickly noticed that the computer was slow, even before installing anything, but thought nothing of it at first, until a day or two later; then it got annoying. I did a bit of research and saw that if you selected "Express setup" you might have a slow laptop in your hands whereas "Custom setup" would allow you to disable unneeded background process and have a faster, well-running PC. I have also noticed an almost-constant high CPU usage and certain IE add-on blockage due to the add-ons "not being compatible w/ IE's enhanced security features." I have never experienced this before and I'm very confused on what to do.
Some friends of mine suggest a fresh install of Windows, while others say they aren't sure if a fresh install will work, some say to return the PC, and others just have no clue on what's happening.

    Any future help is appreciated!

Well, since it is new, I would suggest reinstalling and do the custom setup as you mentioned. Being new there would be no data issues unless of course you have copied data from another computer already. Or, you can start cleaning the "HP Crapware" from the computer by uninstalling everything that you don't need. OR, take it back since it is new and try another one. Anyway, my 2 cents.

Check task manager to see which programs are using excess CPU

Looking at the spec it has 2GB RAM so if you have too much background stuff going on it will be prone to swap file a lot You will see a lot of lag between actions when it is swap filing. If you have the opportunity return it and get one with at least 3GB RAM. I've just got a new W8.1 laptop and it seems quite demanding RAM-wise compared to W7 but I've got 4GB RAM so it's not a problem; it will top 2GB with 4 Tabs open in Firefox so there isn't a lot of leeway with 2GB. Getting all the updates seemed to smooth things out and turning off live tiles. Also disable everything in your Start Up. Ccleaner has a Start Up tab in Tools you can easily select stuff to disable from starting up with Windows ...this doesn't disable the programs. You can still start them from their usual place in the menus.

I guess I'll try re-installing Windows first and going through the custom installation process. If that doesn't work out, I'll just return it and see if I can get a better laptop. Thanks for the suggestions, everyone.

EDIT: I'm just returning it. My uncle is trying to find a better computer for me.

Make sure you get all the updates before you judge it. It seemed to smooth things out and seem nippier after doing that. I've had my Acer laptop a week (2.15GHz Celeron and 4GB RAM) and I must say that W8.1 is significantly faster than W7 for me. When you are done make sure your Start Up programs are mostly disabled ...Ccleaner is the easiest way to access that.

My Dell tablet scores 1285 (Intel Z3770) so it's a lot faster despite having no fans. 4 GB or RAM and eMMC storage makes Windows 8.1 fast for everyday tasks.
