start menu apps... are any necessary?

it seems windows8.1 has more clutter than any before it...

there are so many apps i'll probably never use
i feel like deleting all of them
but i need to know what they are...

i suppose all these music movie reading and game links
go to websites so i could probably get rid of all those...

wildtangent games - isn't that a virus?

even the one that says microsoft solitaire collection
looks suspicious to me... what is it?
where does it go?

the thing that bugs me the most is how
microsoft ignored flash all these years
now suddenly all my flash videos open with
windows live movie maker which is some online thing
with all these agreements and such and who knows what
and every time i accidentally click on one there it is again
and it yells at me for not accepting...

windows live essentials 2011
If you use the software to access content that has been protected with Microsoft Digital Rights Management (DRM), the software may automatically request media usage rights from an online rights server and download and install DRM updates in order to let you play the content.

i'd like to get rid of all of this...
all this cyberlink stuff all this hp stuff
who knows if i need it or not?
there's like sixty programs installed...

is there a list somewhere of all the apps installed
that would let me know what and where they are
that would help me make an intelligent decision?

i could click on everything and see where it goes
but i really don't want to do that...

thanks for any help you can give...

Try going to the Store and find the Apps and they should have information on each App.

:ditto: The OEM's put most of that junk on there. My ASUS laptop was loaded with crap Apps. The list of what I uninstall goes way down on a clean install of just Windows versus the factory install. .

Good or bad, if you have logged in with your live ID, all those Apps are now listed in your "My Apps" section of the Windows Store. If you uninstall an App and then find that you actually need it, you can go to your "My Apps" section and reinstall it. It will be listed there, even if you forget what it was called.

If you open the Windows store and click Account > My Apps they should all be listed there. Saves searching for them one at a time. ;)

The thing is though, installed Metro Apps are not listed in programs and features. Only installed desktop programs are listed there. There isn't one place that they are all listed.

EDIT: Other than the All Apps screen I guess. If you right click on a desktop program from there, and select uninstall, it will open programs and features. if it's a metro app it will give you an option to uninstall it.

I have not owned a store bought oem computer since 1997/running win95,[except for laptops I bought for my daughter for university and they were win7 or vista .and I removed the crapware from those ,]and that was the last time I bough any version of windows ,so I might be totally wrong ,but I think a lot of the metro app that show on start screen or allapps are not even installed yet ,just guessing though

On my ASUS laptop, they were all installed on first boot. Same deal with my wife's Acer. All the factory installed Apps and programs are there and usable. They both came with 8.0 core.

One thing I have noticed though, is on a clean install on my synced PC's, is some apps show with an X on them and have to be installed to be used. It depends on your one drive sync options. I have installed apps synced on my desktop and laptop. On a clean install, the tile is there, but I have to click the tile to install the app for it to work. it's hard to describe unless you've actually done it.

Anyway, its a totally different experience on the first time logging into an OEM PC versus a clean install. Google OOBE and you may see what I mean.

@ caperjack, Yeah, I would never buy a pre-built desktop PC. Like you I prefer to roll my own. Not much choice when you buy a laptop though. I wasn't long before I wiped the factory install and did my own custom clean install. That's when you see the difference. The clean install is so uncluttered compared to the OEM install, it isn't funny.

should have checked back sooner, but i went to should i remove it
they had a lot of info there and i looked around a bit
and uninstalled a few microsoft and apple things i'll never use

i began to see all the hp stuff and hp update was there
and it said they send things back home
and uninstalling it would be ok so i did...

upon doing so it gave six error messages
saying it couldn't unload dlls or processes or something
so i gave it a rest a while...

i rebooted and everything seems to be fine...

the first thing i got rid of was the windows live
(i kept the icons cause they were pretty)
and all the wild tangent games
and all the online things i could find...

all the wildtangent games are still on the apps screen
and in the games folder too
with the option to uninstall still there
even though they're all gone...
does anyone know how to get rid of these?

i'd get rid of the store too if i could
and the games folder too
cause they made it only for them...

i have tons of games, it'd be nice to use it
i'll make my own...

got rid of the mail too cause it's tied in with people
i don't talk to people that way...
and all those full screen things are scary
might get rid of the reader too because of that..

videos is xbox so that goes...
does anyone know if the microsoft solitaire and mahjongg
is an online thing or not?
and what kindle is?
and what the alarm thing is?

that's about it for now...
thanks for any help or tips... :)

The wild tangent games I think you have to uninstall one at a time. It sounds like you just uninstalled a wild tangent program that is part of it. The Reader App is I believe Adobe Reader. I keep that installed as I use it to read PDF files. I uninstall Mail as I use outlook for that. I also uninstall the People, Travel, and News Apps. I'd never use them. Easy enough to reinstall anyway if I found I needed one of them. You can't uninstall the Store App, that option isn't shown. There are a couple of other ones that also can't be uninstalled. Not easily and not without probably breaking something in the process

as for wildtangent it will popup and all the games show in a list and you have to check off the box for each game, or check all I think

Microsoft solitaire and Mahjong are simple games (except when I can't solve them :D). You can play them offline but if you are online when you open them they try to link you to xbox. And there are certain aspects of them that you need to be online for.

If you don't want them, uninstall (though I had to go to the store to download them in the first place, so I wonder how you got them if you didn't actually choose them yourself??).

ahhh... i bet my sister did it before she gave it to me
cause i asked her what the store was and she knew...
i have plenty of mahjongg and solitaire games (hundreds)
without having to deal with the online thing
so thanks for telling me...

hi caperjack
i uninstalled wildtangent games from the control panel
and yes there were a bunch of them
i checked all of them, one at a time
and they were all gone from the programs folder and the list
it left behind some folders under documents and appdata i think
so i got rid of those

but there are still shortcuts on the app screen
which is the games folder showing up there
shortcuts to their website, five different ones
which are still in the games folder
under games providers
with no option to delete it

there's a choice to hide the game provider
but it's not the same as deleting...
where is it?

alphanumeric
i uninstalled all the things you did (and more...)
guess i'll leave the store...

kindle's gone,
i don't read books
i write my own
by living it...

The Modern apps (Start Screen) are mostly duplicates of Desktop apps (Start menu). The decision is your to make on which ones to use - you can keep both or neither.

I only have Desktop apps on my machine as I am familiar with them and prefer them to the modern apps. Games (majhong and Solitaire are not offered in Win8, except for Modern apps - so I keep them). You need the Store and PC Settiings apps as well.

Uninstall what you don't use or have replaced with a 3rd party program (VLC instead of Media player or Music/Video Modern apps in my case). Reader is kind of nice when used with Modern Explorer - you can view a page that is setup for Reader in text/book mode ... but it also overrides my Nitro PDF rdr, so that I do not like.

Play with the apps and if you like it, keep it, if you have a desktop version and prefer that, uninstall the Modern app.

Other than Store and PC settings, I can't think of any required Modern Apps.

I saw a mention of HP bloat - that would be in the Start menu (maybe on the Start Screen but that's just another reference/link to the Desktop application)

Some asked you to define the issue a little better - Modern apps make that more imperative. Members need to know what 'start' you want to clean up. Control Panel - Programs and Features hasn't changed so if you want to see what is installed, go there.

Screen shots are very helpful for members on this side of your monitor.
